Week One - September 5-7

Cougars 4  Wolves 2

The answer to the trivia question, who scored the first goal of the 2019-2020 VIJHL season, is Matthew Clark of the Victoria Cougars. In the league opener, Thursday, he turned the light on at 13:35 of the first from Jude Wessel and Ethan Roworth. Just over 30 seconds later Captain Cameron LeSergent gave Victoria a 2-0 lead.

Early in the middle frame, Westshore Captain Kahlil Fontana scored Westshore’s first of the season from Cory Mater and Henry Rust.

The Wolves evened things up early in the third on a Chase Klassen power play goal. Marshall Brown scored the winner at 14:10 and Clarke sealed the Victoria win with his second of the contest three minutes later.

4-2 Cougars final.

Brett Anderson took the win while Dalan Marleau the loss but played very well.

The Wolves went 1/3 on the power play while the Cougars were 0 for 5.

The Game Stars were Matt Clarke and Marleau who faced 40 shots in the Wolves’ net.

Generals 5  Buccaneers 2

The Oceanside General ruined the Nanaimo Buccaneers’ party at the Pirate Ship, handing the home side a 5-2 loss.

Liam Moody opened the scoring on the PP, the first power play goal of the VI season, from Dawson Heathcote and Trey Boylan. The Bucs responded 15 seconds later when Dylan Tonks found the equalizer.

One – one after 1.

The Gens outscored Nanaimo 3-1 in the second on goals from Brad Cimaglia, Brady Kay and Dawson Heathcote.

Heathcote added his second of the night late in the third for the 5-2 final.

The other Nanaimo goal came from Tate Roulette.

James Brendeland with the win.

The Game Stars were Roulette for the Buccaneers and Heathcote, with 3 points, for the Generals.

Earlier in the day there was some great news. The Oceanside Generals announced that all their games, home and away, are once again being carried by ‘88.5 The Beach, Oceanside’s Soft Rock’. The VIJHL Broadcaster of the Year, Kyle Ireland will be behind the mic. Thanks to ‘The Beach’, Island Radio, Kyle Ireland and as Kyle says every game “Roger Blanchard back at Beach studios for making this broadcast possible.”

Wolves 2  Generals 1

At Howie Meeker Arena it was a goaltender’s duel between sophomore James Brendeland and newcomer Jacob Haydar. The rookie came out on top as the Westshore Wolves came from behind to defeat the Oceanside Generals 2-1.

Landon Dziadyk opened the scoring late in the first. Brendan Martin evened the match midway through the second before Chase Klassen scored the winner with 5 minutes left in the middle stanza.

The power play wasn’t a factor for either team.

The two goalies, Brendeland and Haydar were the game stars.

2-1 Westshore final.

Buccaneers 4  Glacier Kings 3

A much better showing on Saturday night for the Glacier Kings as they gave Nanaimo a ride but ended up just short dropping their home opener 4-3 to their Harbour City opponents.

It was a sweet sixteen for the birthday boy, Luc Pelletier, who scored twice and was a game star. Also scoring for the Panthers were Jonah Ragsdale, Matthew Sparrow, Lucas Thomson-Fiddes, Riley Braun, Denver Maloney and Tanner Wort.

Rylan Campbell scored the lone Islander goal.

Connor McKillop picked up his 2nd win of the season.

Storm 2  Braves 0

Following a disappointing performance on Friday night, the Saanich Braves came to Campbell River and played a strong first period peppering big Robert Michetti with 17 shots. He stood tall allowing his teammates time to rally and take over in the second.

Dylan Franklin opened the scoring at 7:23 of the second and Jory Swanson added an insurance goal twelve minutes later.

Saanich netminder, Connor Svienson was brilliant facing 39 shots in the final 40 minutes. He and Michetti were the game stars.

The VIJHL Player of the Week is Owen Christenson of the Campbell River Storm who earned 6 points over the weekend. Honorable mention goes to Peninsula’s Matthew Sparrow and Nanaimo’s Dylan Hartl.

It’s a little early but here are the scoring leaders

Owen Christensen leads with 6 points, Riley Braun is next with 5, while Matthew Sparrow and Dylan Hartl are tied in third with 4 points.

Among goaltenders, it’s just too early. Robert Michetti is coming off a great weekend, 2 wins, .5 GAA, a .973 SV and a shutout. James Brendeland faced 79 shots over the weekend and posted a .949 SV.
