Selkirk College Saints Reward Excellence at Year-End Banquet

Apr 16 2018
The Selkirk College Saints enjoyed a highly successful 2017-2018 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season with the student-athletes representing the program on and off the ice. The annual year-end banquet shone a spotlight on the best of the best.

The Selkirk College Saints put the official wrap on the 2017-2018 season at the team’s annual year-end banquet where they recognized the best performances on and off the ice.

Team captain and three-year British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) veteran Dallas Calvin came away with a handful awards that included being honoured as the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Trail native finished the most recent campaign as the league’s top scorer and completed his Selkirk College career second in all-time program scoring behind former captain Logan Proulx.

“Dallas was the team’s leader in so many ways this season,” says Saints’ head coach Brent Heaven. “He is an exceptional hockey player who has been the backbone of our offence for three seasons. But just as importantly, this season he led by example off the ice with his work in the classroom and the community. We’re going to miss him.”

Selkirk College Saints players who won scholastic and team awards gather for a group shot with the coaching staff at the team’s annual awards banquet that was held at the Castlegar Golf Course.

Calvin was also included on the list of Scholastic Achievement Award winners with Dane Feeney, Jackson Bruce-Fuoco, Brett Huber, Nelson Hurry, Kadrian Klimchuk, Devin Nemes, Parker Sharp, Parker Wakaruk and Patrick Zubick. The awards were given to student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 grade point average or above.

“These awards are the highlight of the evening for me,” says Heaven. “Balancing the heavy workload of academics with the rigours of a hockey season that includes daily practices and workouts with weekend games is very difficult. I have a great deal of respect for those who are able to do it and do it well.”

Five Saints Moving On

Other team awards included: Defenceman of the Year - Parker Wakaruk; Rookie of the Year - Brandon Sookro; Top Scorer - Dallas Calvin; Coaches Award - Gordon Campbell and Parker Sharp; and Unsung Hero - Tyler Hartman. The Saints Spirit Award was given to assistant captain Jackson Bruce-Fuoco.

The Community Service Award, which is handed out based on hours served doing volunteer work in a variety of different outlets, was shared by Calvin, Wakaruk and Zubick. Wakaruk and Calvin were also presented with a BCIHL First Team All Star plaques and defenceman Seth Schmidt received a BCIHL Playoff All Star plaque for his performance in the post-season.

Five Saints players who logged three seasons with the team included: (L-R) Derek Georgopoulos, Brett Huber, Dane Feeney, Nelson Hurry and Dallas Calvin.

As is tradition, five third-year players were also honoured and presented with a game worn jersey. Calvin, Huber, Hurry, Feeney and Derek Georgopoulos all played their final season with the Saints. All five will leave with the memory of a 2016 BCIHL Championship season to their credit.

The Saints lost in the 2018 BCIHL Championship final to the Trinity Western University Spartans, but Heaven says the season was one of the best in the program’s history.

“We fell just short in the end, but this program has been in the championship final five out of the last six seasons,” Heaven says. “That’s pretty impressive because we are the only college team playing in a league comprised of university teams that have the advantage of four-year programs.”
