The University of Victoria has announced a commitment from 1999-born defenceman Alex Benger for the 2020/21 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Benger is a Victoria, B.C. native who has suited up in 154 regular season and playoff games in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League with the Victoria Cougars and Peninsula Panthers. The 21-year old scored four times and added 22 assists in 48 games this season, bringing his career totals to 24 goals and 79 points.
He helped the Panthers to the second-best record in the VIJHL last season at 35-13-0, good for 70 points. Peninsula was battling the Cougars in the second round of the league playoffs when the season was suspended due to COVID-19.
Benger joins forwards Lach Hadley, Finn Withey, Dominic Turner, Colton Hutchinson, Jack Fairfield, Tyler Cannon and Lucas Thompson, as well as defenceman Cianan Briscoe and goaltender Blake Pilon, as players who have commited to join the Vikes next season.Additional announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
