Games are underway at the National Festival in Calgary - and there have already been some upsets and the teams that are normally on form have all show they deserve that reputation.
A huge victory for Newfoundland's U16 men - as they got by Ontario 1 by a 25-19 score. From all accounts Basil Crosbie's entry into the category has the makings of giant killers at this tournament. The Rock lads also beat New Brunswick 29-3 and are in a three way tie atop the table in terms of wins - but BC and Ontario 2 both enjoyed bonus point victories. for 10 points in the standings.
British Columbia is in a first place tie with Ontario - both teams at 2-0 after the first day.
Of note in the U18 Men's category was a huge effort by the Manitoba team, holding on for 8-7 win over Alberta.
Another close contest was Saskatchewan getting by New Brunswick 17-10.
On the women's U18 side the even steven game of the day happened when Ontario 1 and Ontario 2 played - with a 7-7 half time score and a 19-19 full time score.
