The Daysland Northstars picked up 2 wins over the Red Deer Rustlers on the weekend and have taken a commanding 2-0 series stranglehold in the Vanberg Cup finals.

On Saturday, Red Deer playing in their first ever Vanberg Cup finals game, came out fast, scoring 2 power play goals in the first 6 minutes but came out on the short end of a 8-2 defeat to the hometown Northstars.  Daysland, who are playing in their fifth consecutive Vanburg Cup finals, broke open a tight game with 4 unanswered third period goals and chased Rustler's goaltender Mike Salmon half way through the period.  Dylan McCombie had a big night with 2-3-5 (there was questions about him getting the assist on the Northstar's 8th goal, but the change wasn't made to the gamesheet at gametime).  Also scoring for Daysland were Ryley Bennefield, Kenny Bradley 1-2-3, Lane Lightning 1-1-2, Zach Ayotte 1-2-3, Brad Trautman 1-2-3 and Clay Lang. Replying for the Rustlers were Dylan Houston 1-1-2 and Ty Berkholtz who each scored on the power play. Connor Dobberthien was solid in net in picking up his 6th win of the playoffs.

The teams headed back to Penhold for Game 2 and this was a much closer affair.  Red Deer held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but as they have for much of this playoff season, Daysland pulled off another 3rd period comeback to take a 4-3 lead with 3:57 remaining in the game.  Red Deer tied it up with 1:31 left and the teams headed to sudden death overtime.  Each team had good chances to win in overtime, however it was the Northstars who got the win with a goal from Tylor Keller at 10:26.  Also scoring for the Northstars were Ryley Bennefield 1-2-3, Lane Lightning 1-1-2, Zach Ayotte and Colin Zimmer. Replying for the Rustlers were Jaret Smith with 2, Dylan Houston and Ty Berkholtz.  Connor Dobberthien again was solid in goal, stopping 46 of Red Deer's 50 shots sent his way, collecting his league leading 7th win of the playoffs.

Game 3 of the finals goes this Friday back in Daysland (8:15), where the Northstars will have an opportunity to win their 4th Vanberg Cup in 5 years.  A Rustler win will bring the teams back to Red Deer Saturday night for Game 4, which will be played at the Servus Arena (8:00)  Red Deer faces a stiff challenge as the Northstars haven't lost 3 games in a row all season.
