COACH, MEN'S STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Matt Barr
The assigned person is responsible for Rugby Canada’s National Men’s Strength & Conditioning program. It is also expected that this person will deliver the program in the National Academy and give direction to (and monitor) the Strength & Conditioning programs operating in the Regional Academies.
The position involves a commitment to aspects of high performance player development and talent identification with particular focus and emphasis upon all elements of Strength & Conditioning. This position will focus upon the progression of talent-identified players from club, school and/or university participation into Rugby Canada’s national and international level programs and the role that strength & conditioning plays in this transition.
The person involved in this role is required to coach, prepare individually based fitness programs, manage players, plan programs and manage high performance team programs.
Matt Barr joined Rugby Canada as the National Strength & Conditioning Manager in 2010 and now operates as the Coach, Men’s Strength & Conditioning. He has a Masters degree in Biomechanics and Coaching from the University of Western Ontario, a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Manitoba, and has worked towards completing a post-graduate diploma in Sport Nutrition through the International Olympic Committee. Matt’s professional experience includes roles as Strength & Conditioning Coach (various teams) at the University of Western Ontario and York University before joining the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific where he designed and implemented training programs for Rugby Canada, Rowing Canada Aviron and Diving Canada Plongeon athletes. He has spent many years working with Rugby Canada’s Senior Men’s and Women’s programs.
Matt has experience as a rugby player, having played at an elite level for ten years, including with the Canadian U23 team, various Manitoba provincial teams and stints playing in Wales and New Zealand. He also has competed in hockey and weightlifting.
Matt currently resides in Victoria, BC.
