COACH, NATIONAL SENIOR WOMEN
John Long
The Head Coach provides leadership to Rugby Canada’s National Women’s programs, give direction to the programs operating in the Regional Academies as well as perform the role of Head Coach of the National Women’s Team and the National Women’s Sevens team. The role is viewed as being an integral and significant element of the high performance player pathway process as outlined in Rugby Canada’s Long Term Rugby Development framework.
The position involves a commitment to aspects of high performance player development and talent identification. This position also focuses upon the progression of talent identified players from club, school and/or university participation into Rugby Canada’s national and international level programs.
The person involved in this role is required to coach, manage players, plan programs and manage high performance programs.
John Long is the National Senior Women’s Program Head Coach. Born in Cheltenham, England, John began his playing career in his hometown before moving to Newbury RFC and the Old Albanians club. After completing a Bachelor of Education (Hons.) in Physical & Outdoor Education at the College of St. Mark & St. John, Plymouth, John was a Teacher and Head of Year in Hartfordshire. Having served as Development Officer for Saracens in England, John moved to Calgary, Alberta and joined the Calgary Hornets club team and Calgary Mavericks (RCSL). He played three years in Calgary before switching to coaching and took over as Head Coach of the Hornets from 2005-2007. Continuing his involvement with rugby in Alberta, John was hired as the Rugby Alberta Junior Development Manager (2007-Present) and was eventually selected as Assistant Coach, and now Head Coach, of Canada’s Senior Women’s team.
John has completed the NCCP Level 3 Coaching course and is also a NCCP Master Facilitator. He also took part in the IRB Talent Identification program and has experience with the sevens game. He continues to reside in Calgary with his wife and two boys.
