Quesnel Millionaires: 97/98
The 1997/1998 season brought great expectations to the Goldpan town of Quesnel. Having worked through a tough and difficult season the year before, both players and fans were hoping to see what a year's worth of experience in the BCHL had given the Millionaires.
The 1997/1998 Millionaires were led by Captain Pat Kenny - and featured a large number of returning players. An early trade was made with the Vernon Vipers which saw power forward Brent Mekelburg head to Quesnel in exchange for defenceman Lennie Rampone. The Quesnel Millionaires also pursued the rights of a Czech player David Ficenec, a speedy D-man with an offensive touch.
The team started off slowly, losing their home opener to their rival Prince George Spruce Kings 7-4 before a fired up Quesnel crowd. But, the rebound for the Mills was swift as they defeated Prince George 9-2 in PG shortly there-after. The Millionaires' first road trip set the scene for exciting future games as the Millionaires defeated both Langley and Powell River while away, leaving them almost halfway to the previous years points total in only a handful of games.
2 Quesnel Millionaires qualified for the Interior Division All-Star team, as well as Head Coach Barry Wolff being named the Asst Coach of the Interior Division All-Star team. Both goaltender Tyler Nilsson and Captain Pat Kenny joined the other players from the Interior Division in Prince George for a banquet, skills competition, practice, and the game itself. As well, Millionaire forward Troy McNallie was named as an alternate to the team, but was not required to play.
The Quesnel Millionaires continued to improve over the season, and fell just 1 point short of a playoff spot in the Interior division of the BCHL. However, the Millionaires increased their record to 21-27-2, a huge step up from their Inaugural BCHL Season.
As well, 4 Quesnel Millionaire players finished the Season in the "Top 25 Scorers" of the BCHL. These were Pat Kenny (102 pts), Troy McNallie (93 points), Wayne Brown (87 points), and Brent Mekelburg (80 points).
Millionaires Head Coach Barry Wolff was named the Interior Division Coach of the Year, in a decision that is voted upon by coaches and General Managers around the league.
As the round-out of the year, the Millionaires were delighted to have three graduating players accept scholarships for the next season. These included Pat Kenny to North Dakota, Wayne Brown to St. Norbert in Wisconsin, and Brent Mekelburg to the University of Alberta.
