Burnaby Coed Slo-Pitch League House Rules
 
 
SPN rules apply with the following exceptions:
  • Game Setup, Roster & Schedule Rules
  1. Players must be 19 years of age or older.
  2. All teams are required to wear matching jerseys with numbers during play.
  3. A full team (10 players) will consist of 6 male (maximum) and 4 female players.
    • Minimum of 9 players, of which 5 are male and 4 are female or 6 are male and 3 are female, and the 10th better is an automatic out. A 10th player may be added after the game has started but must be inserted in the 10th batting position.
  4. The batting lineup is unlimited with the following conditions: 
    • No more than 2 males shall bat in a row.
    • No less than 40% of your lineup can be female.
    • If you bat 12 then you must have 5 females. If you bat 13 you must have 6 females etc. You can bat an odd number of players as long as the 40% female ratio is met (not following the 2022 SPN rule change)
  5. All score sheets and lineup cards must be completed with each players first and last name.
  6. A grace period of 15 (fifteen) minutes will be given to teams that do not have enough players to begin play. If the home team uses the grace period they will be forced to bat first.
  7. Game Times:
    • Weeknight single games: 6:45pm and 8:15pm, unless otherwise specified
    • Weeknight double-header games: 6:15pm, 7:30pm, and 8:45pm, unless otherwise specified
    • Weekend games: 9:30am 10:45am, 12:00pm, 1:15pm, 2:30pm, & 3:45pm, unless otherwise specified 
    • Playoff games: TBD
  8. Game Time Limits:
          • Regular Season Single games (90 minute game slot): No new inning to begin 75 minutes after start time unless specified in advance.
          • Regular Season Doubleheaders (75 minute game slot): No inning to begin 65 minutes after start time unless specified in advance (games before/after).
          • Playoffs and single headers: TBD and will be specified prior. 
  9. All league games ending in a tie after 7 (seven) complete innings or an expired time limit will be considered a tie.
  10. Winning team or home team in the event of a tie is responsible for entering the score on the league website within 24 hours of game completion.  Both teams are accountable to ensure the score is entered on the league website and entered accurately.
    • Penalty: Winning team will not receive credit for the victory and both teams will have 1 (one) point deducted from their standings.
  11. No reschedule requests 
  12. Games that can not start (i.e. forfeits) will be a 7-0 default loss, $50 fine and -1 point in the standings. 
  13. A decision will be made at (not before) 4:30 pm on game days (or two hours prior on weekends) if games are to be postponed due unsafe playing conditions and a post  will be made on the league website. If games are declared ON, the umpire is the only individual with the authority to cancel a game at the park on game day.
  14. The distance between bases is 65 feet.
  • Game Play Rules
  1. The maximum runs for innings
    • Innings 1 through 5 = Catch up +5 runs
    • Innings 6 and 7 = unlimited
  2. No mercy rule.
  3. The commitment, or safety, line is 20 (twenty) feet from home plate towards 3rd base. All plays at home are considered force plays.
  4. A walk to a male batter, with a female following, on 4 (four) pitches or less will result in the male batter being awarded 2nd base.
    • All other runners may be moved up as forced.
    • The female batter following must bat.
  5. 3 (three) courtesy runners are allowed per game.
    • The courtesy runner can be male or female if running for a male. The courtesy runner must be a female if running for a female.
    • The courtesy runner can run from any base safely reached by the batter.
    • Only players listed on the lineup card are eligible to be courtesy runners.
    • The same runner may be used more than once.
  6. There is no encroachment line. A female batter that hits the ball to the outfield may not be thrown out at 1st base; if an outfielder wishes to make a play at 1st base then they must relay the ball to another player before the ball can be thrown to first base.
    • Exceptions are: A player can run the ball to first to make the out OR a throw directly to first can be made if the ball got deflected off an infielder while travelling to the outfield 
  7. No homerun rule. 
  8. Leadoffs are not allowed. Umpires to use discretion on intent.
  9. There is no stealing allowed.
  10. There is no bunting allowed. 
  11. The umpire must state the official start time of the game in the captains meeting.
  12. The Strike Zone is used to determine balls and strikes (no mat ball). 
  13. The count will start at 0 balls and 0 strikes.
  14. Players are allowed to wear baseball caps backwards.
  • Bats
  1. For 2024 we will follow the SPN National Bat Policy. Link to the SPN site is below:
  2. Penalties for being caught with a banned or altered bat in the Burnaby Coed Slo-League are as follows:
    • Regular Season Games:
      • 1st offense: Penalty to Team = Loss of Game + $50 fine (comes off of team bond)
      • 2nd offense: Penalty to Team = Loss of Game + $100 fine (comes off of team bond)
      • 3rd offense: Penalty to Team = Banned from league for 1 year
    • Playoff Games:
      • 1st offense: Penalty to Team = Ejected from Playoffs
  3. All bats used in the BCSL must have the USSSA 1.20 BPF thumbprint as listed below to be allowed (New 2021 USSSA logo is okay). 
  • Team and Player Eligibility
  1. Players must be registered and have played in at least 6 league games to be eligible for the playoffs.
  2. A teams roster must be completed prior to the start of the season and received by SPN before play. Any additions to the roster must be submitted to SPN before play.
  3. Players can only be listed on one (1) teams roster.
  4. Inclusion of an individuals name on the roster is an indication that the individual is aware of the Rules, Constitution and Bylaws and will abide by its Rules, Constitution and Bylaws.
  • Unacceptable Behaviour
  1. A physical strike by any member of the BCSL as a result of league activities shall result in the suspension of that member for a period of three (3) to five (5) years from the date of the incident. Following the suspension, readmission may only be granted through a general meeting vote with a majority of the league in support.
  2. Any member who threatens to strike someone as a result of league activities will be suspended for the remainder of the season plus playoffs. Readmission may only be granted through a general meeting vote with a majority of the league in support.
  3. Verbal abuse or general threat will result in a penalty ranging from a warning to a one year suspension, depending on the extent and severity of the incident.
  4. Drunken players, at the umpires discretion, may be ejected from the game and/or park.
  5. Any team member consuming alcoholic beverages at a league event which were NOT purchased from a league authorized vendor, where applicable, will have the team fined $50 and the player suspended for the remainder of the season and playoffs. The suspended players team will receive a warning and be put on probation for the current season and next.
  6. Mangers/Coaches are expected to promote sportsmanlike behavior within the league. Failure to do so may result in the Manager/Coach and entire team being place on probation or expelled from the league.
Resolution Procedures
  1. The plaintiff should report unsportsmanlike conduct, verbally to any member of the executive. This is to be followed by a written report to the President before any action will be taken. Such reports should be fully documented and signed by the game umpire, if applicable. Reports must be submitted within seventy two (72) hours of the incident.
  2. A BCSL disciplinary committee will be struck to discuss each report. The Plaintiff and accused will be invited to give their side of the story combined with any witness reports.
  3. The The BCSL Disciplinary Committee decision will not be put to a general league meeting.
  4. Any member of the BCSL who feels they have been unjustly penalized may appeal the decision in writing to the President, within 48 hours. After reviewing the situation the Presidents decision will be final
