We're changing the game. Welcome to the National Hockey Super League - Australia's first ever professional ice hockey competition.
The National Hockey Super League (NHSL) is a professional ice hockey league in Australia comprising of three teams with the goal to have 15 teams Australia wide by 2023.
In year 1, the NHSL features three teams made up of predominantly South Australian-based players but will expand to a national format next summer to showcase the best talent Australia has to offer.
The first three team names are the Noarlunga Stars, Port Adelaide Brewers and Adelaide XTreme. Each team contains a reference to South Australia or the Ice Hockey community in the state.
Games will be played on Friday nights in front of a crowd at the IceArenA. The competition will be an enjoyable, entertaining family experience that will highlight the fast-paced action ice hockey offers.
The league will feature a rulebook similar to the NHL.
Three well known South Australian ice hockey figures were appointed as a General Managers to run each of the teams. Each GM could choose a Head Coach. They are:
- Adelaide Xtreme: Tash Farrier (GM) and Eric Lien (Head Coach)
- Noarlunga Stars: Matt Lothian (GM) and Sami Mantere (Head Coach)
- Port Adelaide Brewers: Bill Newbound (GM) and Mitch Villani (Head Coach)
The teams then went to work in filling out roster. Each team was allowed to contract two marquee players to build their team around, but the player can not be from the same club in the IHSA season.
Players - over 120 of them - registered for a live draft. Teams filled out their rosters during the draft and have got to work training!
You can follow the NHSL on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Here are the rosters for each of the teams:
- Adelaide Xtreme
- Noarlunga Stars
- Port Adelaide Brewers
Tickets will be on sale soon. The first game is November 12 at the Ice ArenA
