After shaky 1st, Flyers notch 3 hat-tricks in crushing the juvenile Nords
- Submitted by
After a couple of close losses against great teams, our Flyers were chopping at the bit to face the near cellar dwelling Nordiques this week ---- but you wouldn't know it by the first period....

Actually things started off well for our boys in orange as Prevost (who we REALLY missed in our loss last week) opened the scoring on a nice 2-on-1 with linemate Scatch.....and a couple of minutes later, Terry made a wicked move around one of their D and fed a pass to Richie who one-timed it home.....but 2 mins after that, a Nordique took a good shot that eluded our goalie Frewey who was kindly filling in for Yeates.....then with about 30 seconds left in the period, the Nords tied the game at 2 with a nice roof shot.....

But being tied with this juvenile team might have been the wake-up call we needed as we came out flying in the 2nd period --- not long after Terry missed an open net on a 2-on-0 break with Rich, "TO" would notch his 2nd tally when he banged home a rebound after converted D-man Fynn broke up a play at half and got a good shot on net.......and on the next shift, with this slim 1-goal lead, Frewey made 2 brilliant saves -- one was a lightning fast right toe save and the other was with a Nord in all alone -- and we rewarded our goalie with 3 goals in the next 2 minutes by Rich from Billy, then Prevost from Rich, then Terry again on another great play from Fynn.....after the Nords got a fluky goal, Terry capped off another hat-trick with another laser shot.....and a few seconds later, Rich finalized his hat-trick when he (purposely or not) tipped a point shot from Billy......making the score 8-3 Flyers after 2.....

A couple of minutes into the 3rd, D-man Colin (who we also missed big time last week) scored a goal when he pinched to create a 2-on-0 with Rich.....then with 10 minutes left in the game, our goalie Frewey had to vacate the premises to as he was feeling ill (and he still is home sick by the way) so the Wise Guys tender was kind enough to fill in.....with zero warm-up, he was rudely greeted with a long shot goal --- but he made a few good saves later when called upon.....our Flyers again went on a quick goal spurt with 3 goals in less than 2 minutes all with our big man Scatch involved -- first Prevost scored to finish off our hat-trick of hat-tricks in this game, then Scatch notched a goal on a nice one-timer, then he set up Terry for an equally nice one-timer for his 4th goal of the game......the Nords got a meaningless goal that was deflected twice to make the final score 12-5 as the "Game Manager" called the game with about 2 minutes left as the young Nords were showing signs like they were about to do something really stupid with the game well out of hand.....they knew they just got slaughtered because really the 12-5 score was somewhat flattering to them -- if we buried our chances and they didn't get their lucky goals, the score could have easily been about 20-2....

Stats for the game: Prevost 3G......Scatch 1G, 3A.....Rich 3G, 3A.....Terry 4G, 2A.....Fynn 2A.....Billy 2A....Colin 1G....

Flyers 3 Stars as voted by our teammates:

---- #1 ---- every single voter (except for himself) voted for Terry as our 1st star as this was clearly his best game so far, and that's saying a lot considering he now has 15 goals in his 5 games in this league -- so an 'average' of a hat-trick per game......and in this one, he also slid to block shots, made some terrific moves around defenders, made great passes, and back-checked to break up chances --- all while keeping his cool against these feisty young lads....

---- #2 ---- almost everybody voted for Richie as our clear #2 star with his 3G and 3A and really he could have had a few more points as he generated a lot more chances with his crafty skills.....his move back to Fwd has been seamless and he deserves a lot of credit for helping linemate Terry fill opposing nets.....

---- #3 ---- in a very close vote, I'm happy to say the collective nod goes to unsung rearguard Colin who got one 1st-star vote (obviously from Terry) along with other votes because we all notice just how effective a player Colin really is --- he's fast, tenacious, hard-working, and very smart with and without the ball whether he's playing on D or at Fwd......

Honourable mention is a tie between linemates Scatch and Prevost who combined for 4G and 3A and who are two of the very best 2-way forwards around --- their styles are as different as their physiques, but they both bust their ass all over the floor to either help us score goals or limit chances against us......and for maybe the first time ever, ALL the other Flyers dressed received star votes --- so kudos to our spare goalie Frewey along with his other 3 D-men Patty, Billy and Fynn -- who, as it was mentioned by a few voters, played a great game in his first on D -- "I think D might be his calling....he may have found a home back there" -- were some quotes from impressed teammates.....

Next week at 9:00pm, we play our last regular season game and it's against a very familiar foe -- the Road Apples -- who, like us, will be relegated to the consolation side of the "A Pool" playoffs for the first time --- so both strong veteran teams with stellar goaltending will be looking to beat the other to not only finish higher in the standings, but also to get momentum for the upcoming 4 playoff games which will be a very tough battle to win the trophy -- especially with these Road Apples and the strong Black Eagles also wanting to salvage their season!
