Bulldog Flyers 2009
Road Apples were just rotten in surely the biggest blowout in our history
- Submitted by
This was supposed to be another chapter in the great novel of classic games between our Flyers and long-time nemesis Road Apples ---- but it was anything but a classic, at least from the Apples side of things as they were absolutely rotten....

The game started off okay for both teams as the two star veteran goalies --- our Mark Yeates and their Chris Campbell --- made a few solid saves to keep the game scoreless for the first 6-7 minutes....then from behind our goal-line D-man Patty cleverly made a hand-pass out of our defensive zone, and even more cleverly (purposely or not) Rich took a step or two towards Patty INTO our defensive zone to receive the pass, then he turned around and fired a nice shot that beat the flustered Campbell who was distracted by what he thought was the wrong call....then 3 mins later, Prevost made a quick pass to Scatch in the slot, and he showed great poise in outwaiting Campbell to beat him with a back-hand deke......on the same shift, Scatch made a slap-shot pass towards Prevost at the lip of the crease, where he easily deposited the ball into the empty net....making the score 3-0 Flyers after 1 period....

About 1 minute into the 2nd stanza, the Road Apples hit their 2nd post of the game keeping us up by 3 until the 6 min. mark when Prevs and Scatch hooked up again, this time Scatch taking a one-timer that found its way in 5-hole.....1 min. later, the Apples got a nice goal when their small speedy Fwd deked around our D and then around Yeates' poke check attempt....and a minute after that, an Apple did a spin-o-rama in our slot that found mesh making the game interesting at 4-2 --- and the game stayed that tight for the next 9-10 mins as both teams desperately tried to take the momentum, but thanks to more stellar saves from Yeates, the Apples wouldn't score again in this period, while we would tack on 3 more tallies --- first Terry made a great move to undress their D and fed Colin for a goal....then Patty blocked a shot and the ball caromed to Scatch who wired a wrister top corner....then Scatch sent Prevs on a mini-break-away and he deked and scored.....making it 7-2 Flyers after 2 periods.....

And the 3rd frame was almost all Flyers as we would score 7 more times --- 3 for Terry, 2 for rearguard Bernie, and singles from Patty and Prevost --- while our stingy team defence and great goalie only allowed 1 more Apple goal to make the final 14-3 in what was surely the biggest blowout in the 10-year history of Flyers-Apples games....I'm not sure what was more impressive -- scoring 14 times against one of the best goalies around, or only allowing 3 goals in this gym against some very talented shooters --- so accomplishing both feats was simply remarkable.....

Stats for the game: Rich 1G, 3A.....Terry 3G, 2A.....Scatch 3G, 2A.....Prevost 3G, 3A.....Colin 1G......Patty 1G, 2A.....Fynn 1A.....Bernie 2G, 1A.....

Flyers 3 Stars as voted by our teammates:

---- #1 ---- getting high votes from every single voter, Scatch was the main man in this game -- not only for his hat-trick and 2A, but Scatch just brings so much more to our team --- from ball possession, chances created, chances averted against us -- he does it all for our team and we clearly missed the big man in our stunning loss last week.....

---- #2 ---- our 2nd of 3 hat-trick players gets the nod as Prevost also chipped in 3A and continues to make an ideal tandem with Scatch as Prevs also makes his presence known all over the floor and he works as hard as anyone to help our team win --- he's the epitome of a spark-plug player -- call him the Bobby Clarke of our Flyers....or, a little more recently, and fittingly as Prevs wears #22 --- he plays a lot like Rick Tocchet.....

---- #3 ---- not surprisingly goes to our 3rd hat-trick man Terry who showed no signs of coming off a concussion as he notched those 3 goals and set up 2 others while also creating at least 6 other glorious chances......there's no doubt Terry has found his infamous mojo in this league.....

Honourable mention by a narrow margin goes to Captain 'Shooter' Patty who scored one of the prettiest goals of the night on a quick moves on a smart pinch, he also assisted on 2 other goals all while providing his usual tenacious defence as Patty clearly prides himself greatly in allowing as few goals as humanly possible when he's on the floor (he's enjoying his last few games as a single man before tying the knot on Dec. 19th)......also getting votes were Bernie (including a 1st-star vote!), Yeates, and Billy....

Next week at 10:00pm we play the tough 2W-0L Black Eagles -- if we beat them, we guarantee ourselves a spot in the 'gold medal' game (albeit of the consolation) the following week......and ironically, we actually could be pitted against the Nordiques if they can beat Mad Scramble next week.....it would be REALLY sweet to exact some revenge against that juvenile team who apparently think we drive together to our games from our nursing home -- one thing I do know, if we continue to play like we did this week, we would beat the Black Eagles, and then we would absolutely crush the pesky Nords ---- but one step at a time, it'll likely be another tough battle against some familiar foes on the Black Eagles -- let's show them that it's our Flyers who are the best squad of this playoff pool.....
