Bulldog Flyers 2009
In a very tough battle right to the end, Flyers clip the Black Eagles
- Submitted by
It was a great game right to the final whistle --- we had 5-1 and 6-2 leads but the feisty Black Eagles, who could have easily made the A-Pool, came back to make it 6-5 with 10 minutes still left to play.....but our main masked man Yeates stole the show and turned aside many glorious chances, and D-man Billy got us the much-needed insurance goal with about 30 seconds left to seal the 7-5 victory....

And with the win, 4 of the 6 teams in our consolation pool finished with 2W-1L records, so it came down to tie breakers --- head-to-head was out because the Nordiques didn't face the Black Eagles or Road Apples (those 3 teams were in the same side of the pool bracket), so it came down to Goals For minus Goals Against which puts our Flyers and the Road Apples in the "Gold Medal Game" next Monday.

Stats for our game this week: Terry 2G......Rich 1G.....Billy 2G, 1A....Scatch 2G.....Prevs 2A.....Bernie 1A

Flyers 3 Stars as voted by our teammates:

---- #1 ---- goes to our goalie Yeates who's very often our best player when we have big wins......he let in one bad goal when he wasn't ready for a surprise shot, but the other 4 goals were either fluky ones going off bodies in front, or they were good goals that he didn't have much chance on ---- Yeates' angles were near flawless and his rebound control was probably the best it's been this season.....

---- #2 ---- goes to D-man Billy who stepped up big time with 2G and 1A and he was also stellar defensively covering his man in our zone and breaking up several dangerous chances in the neutral zone.....

---- #3 ---- goes to Prevost who didn't score but picked up 2 helpers and he was also commended for his extreme patience in putting up with all kinds of abuse all game long --- he battled back of course, but never lost his cool and continued to work hard all over the floor to help us win.....or as Yeates aptly put it: "Prevost was a catalyst offensively and took a physical beating all game and kept right on going...if that were on the street the police would have been called for a mugging."

Honourable mention goes to Terry who notched another 2 goals and maybe fittingly, both were made possible by him breaking up a play near half and then using his precise laser-like shot to bulge the twine in scoring our first 2 goals of the game -- TO also blocked at least half a dozen shots with his great baseball slides.....also getting votes was Scatch who could and should be a game star in every game he plays -- easily the most underrated star player who's ever worn a Flyers jersey.....

Next week at 8:00pm promises to be another classic battle in the very long Flyers vs. Road Apples history ----- yes, we crushed them 14-3 last week, but that was an aberration, and they were missing their best offensive player --- and actually, it's BECAUSE we beat them so badly last week that I have no doubt they'll be out to exact revenge in the last game of the Fall season --- and, very sadly, maybe the last ever Road Apples vs. Flyers game ever....
