CHARLOTTETOWN – The Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride defeated their arch-rivals for the first time this season on Thursday night.
The Pride scored single goals in each period en route to a 3-1 home-ice victory over the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild at the Bell Aliant Centre on the UPEI campus.
The Wild had won the first three head-to-head meetings between the province’s two entries in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.
Three different players – Shaul Mitton (1-1), Kennedy Gallant (1-1) and Nick Reeves – contributed goals for the Pride, who improved to 4-7-1 (won-lost-overtime losses). Sam McNeill, Riley MacDougall, Cole Larkin and affiliated player Keegan Mitchell set up the markers.
Chandler Wood’s unassisted power-play tally in the first period accounted for Kensington’s scoring.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period, and the Pride took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.
Winning goaltender Ben Parent turned aside 33 of 34 shots while Caleb Coyle made 31 saves on 31 attempts in the Kensington goal. The Pride’s third tally was into an empty net.
The Wild (7-3-1) hosts the Saint John Vitos (7-4-0) at Community Gardens on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Pride is on the road this weekend as they visit the Moncton Flyers (9-3-1) on Saturday night and the Fredericton Caps (3-7-0) on Sunday afternoon.
