East Kootenay General Manager Job Description
Position: East Kootenay General Manager
Team: U15 & U18 East Kootenay Avalanche AA
Season: 2025/2026
Reports To: East Kootenay Executive Board
Summary:
The East Kootenay General Manager oversees the U15 and U18 Tier 1 programs, providing leadership in program development, staff management, and player development. This role ensures that all team operations align with the vision, policies, and regulations of the East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association while fostering a high-performance environment that encourages good citizenship and sportsmanship.
Responsibilities:
Program Development & Leadership: - Develop the Tier 1 program within the zone through promotion, recruiting, fundraising, and sponsorship initiatives.
- Adhere and uphold the BC Hockey Code of Conduct and Alberta Elite Hockey League program’s values.
- Review coaching staff applications with the East Kootenay Secretary and Zone Committee, conducting interviews to select the Head Coach for the season.
- Work with the Zone Committee and Head Coach to select Assistant Coaches for the season.
Player Evaluations: - Coordinate Spring and Main evaluation camps in conjunction with coaching staff and the Zone Committee.
- Assume a lead role in player evaluations during evaluation camps and throughout the season.
Staff Development: - Coordinate development initiatives for coaching and team staff to ensure program excellence.
- Work with the Team Coordinator to develop a workflow to meet deadlines and ensure game day duties are executed.
Team Operations: - Management of teams within TeamSnap
- Oversee all aspects of team travel including transportation, accommodations, and meals. Coaches will book their own accommodations and meals and provide you with an itinerary for the bus company.
- Obtain necessary equipment and supplies for the team.
- Monitor the use of affiliate players to ensure program standards.
- Request permission to enter tournament(s) or play exhibition game(s) from BC Hockey
- Provide BC Hockey staff with parent meeting sessions pre-season, mid-season, and end of season.
Compliance & Monitoring: - Ensure teams adhere to all BC Hockey, Alberta Elite Hockey League, and Hockey Canada rules and regulations.
- Monitor the conduct of players and coaches before, during, and after games, addressing issues with the Zone Committee as necessary.
- Verify referee fees are provided to the appropriate team representative before each game and maintain a sign-off sheet for tracking.
- Ensure team representative is fulfilling all host team duties.
Communication & Reporting: - Ensure a copy of the game sheet is sent to the league administrator after each game.
- Provide necessary information to the Treasurer to prepare financial reports, including a financial summary of evaluation camps, monthly financial updates, and an end-of-season report.
- Work with the Treasurer to coordinate team financial matters, including budget development, collection of player fees, payment of bills, sponsorships, and advertising.
Certification & Safety: - Working with BC Hockey Operations ensure team officials acquire the required coaching certifications as mandated by BC Hockey and Alberta Elite Hockey League.
- Confirm the presence of a certified Hockey Canada Safety Person for all sanctioned events.
Disciplinary Oversight: - Work with parents/guardians to address and resolve issues when players are not in good standing, ensuring they do not participate in team events until reinstated.
Promotion of Program - Share program details within the East Kootenay District
- Answer questions from interested participants, parents, and community members through in-person meetings, email, social media, and phone calls.
- Promote the program in coordination with the EK Secretary on social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook with engaging posts, updates, and testimonials.
Qualifications: - Criminal Record Check (CRC)
- Respect in Sport (RIS)
- Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT)
- Hockey Canada Safety Person (HCSP)
- Understanding BC Hockey Program of Excellence
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Experience in staff management and development.
- Adhere to East Kootenay Avalanche Policies and Procedures
- Non-parent status
Compensation:The position provides an annual stipend of
$7,500 for the 2025/2026 season, distributed as follows:
- $625 from Spring tryout fees, paid by May 1, 2025
- $3,125 per team from player fees ($6,250 total), paid in monthly installments on the 10th of the month.
- $625 from Main Camp tryout fees, paid by September 1, 2026
Vision of the East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association: - Promote and encourage good citizenship and sportsmanship among players and coaches.
- Provide a Tier 1 hockey program within the district.
- Offer an excellent environment for instruction, development, and competition to prepare players for higher levels of hockey.
Grounds for Release from Position:The East Kootenay Avalanche reserves the right to release team officials for the following:
- Failure to meet job responsibilities.
- Disrespect for the rules and regulations of Hockey Canada and BC Hockey.
- Failure to uphold the philosophy and values of BC Hockey, the Alberta Elite Hockey League, and the East Kootenay District Minor Hockey Association.
- Use of alcohol or drugs during any sanctioned event.
- Any conduct deemed by the East Kootenay Board to be contrary to the best interest of the program.
