A perfect weekend in the Capital Region has the Richmond Devils alone in first place after Week One in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League.
The Devils swept the Island Surge in a pair of games, winning 3-0 Saturday night at the Panorama Rec Centre then posting a 6-2 victory Sunday morning at the Esquimalt Arena.
Devils netminder Jenna Ehling turned aside 17 Surge shots in Saturday’s game to earn the first shutout of the SCWHL season. Deanna Mohr opened the scoring a couple of minutes into the second period, but Richmond was unable to add to their goal total until the final minute of play.
Sidney Brown netted the second Devils goal with 47 seconds to play, then Lauren Miller scored into an empty net with 19 seconds left on the clock.
Sydney Akai-Platt was a standout in the Surge goal. The former McKendree Bearcats (NCAA) netminder stopped all but two of the 42 shots she faced.
Sunday morning in Esquimalt, Miller paced the Richmond attack with three goals and an assist. Emily Chau, Melissa Phillips and Kelsey Wagner also tallied for the Devils.
Tesla Moisy and Sara Charbonneau were the goal scorers for the Surge.
The first-year Burnaby Mountain Capitals won their first-ever SCWHL game Sunday evening at Planet ice – Coquitlam, edging the Fraser Valley Jets 5-4 in the first game of the season for both teams.
The Capitals trailed 2-0 before rallying to tie the scored 2-2 after one period of play. The Jets went up 4-2 early in the second period. Burnaby Mountain again evened the scored before the intermission, then scored the lone goal of the third frame, a game-winner from Alicia Zahn with 13 minutes to play.
Mackenna Burns, Cara Leone, Isabella Thomson-Fiddles and Grace Hannburg were the other goal scorers for the Capitals.
Lindsay DiPietro with two goals, Chelsea Wilson and Jackie Lang replied for Fraser Valley.
The Meadow Ridge Moose split a pair of road games against the Kamloops Vibe at the Mcarthur Island Arena.
Sarah Botter, Michelle Morrison and Rochelle Smith scored for the Vibe in a 3-1 win Saturday night. Payge Pena scored the lone Moose goal. Meadow Ridge outshot Kamloops 31-30, but Vibe netminder Ashley Fisher made 30 saves.
Emily Bajkov scored twice to lead the Moose to a 4-1 win Sunday. Pena and Brie Bellerive netted one each for Meadow Ridge, while Natalie Knight scored for the Vibe.
Megan Buchanan had a 30-save effort in the Moose goal.
At Planet Ice – Coquitlam, the South Fraser TNT and North Shore Rebels played to a 4-4 tie.
Claire Wong netted two goals and an assist to lead the TNT. Jamie Jacquard-Sowa and Michelle Zeigler added a goal each for South Fraser.
Avery Hutton. Nicole Charlton, Emily Froese and Nicole Pederson tallied once each for North Shore.
