WEEKEND RECAP, FURTHER UPDATE ON COLE CUSITAR

WEEKEND RECAP, FURTHER UPDATE ON COLE CUSITAR

SEHL Staff

GET WELL SOON COLE
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Imperials captain Cole Cusitar, who was seriously injured
in a freak accident in Saturday night's game in Esterhazy. At last report, Cole was in stable
condition and starting to heal up. Neck guards are strongly recommended for all on-ice
personnel moving forward.

UPDATE - Cole received 80 stitches (inside and outside) to the area that was cut (pretty much under the jaw line and up high on the neck from hear his ear to his chin.  As of 7pm Sunday evening, Cole was still in hospital for observation and listed as stable, in pain and on meds, recovering.  More information from the doctor is expected to be delivered to his family today.

It was a wild weekend in the SEHL, starting on Friday night with an absolute rollercoaster of a
game in Esterhazy. The visiting Langenburg Warriors roared out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the
first period, only to see the Flyers storm back with five straight goals. Down by scores of 5-3
and 6-4, the Warriors rallied with two power play goals off of a Eli Halcrow match penalty in the
last 5:44 to push the game to overtime, only for Jayden Isaac to cap off the massive upset and
send the hometown crowd home happy with a 7-6 Flyers win. Hayden Wiebe led the Warriors’
attack with a goal and three assists, while the Flyers spread their offence around with seven
different goal scorers. Dakota Berezowski went the distance between the pipes for the Flyers,
while Brendan Birch Hayden took the loss in relief of Carter Olson for Langenburg.
In the other Friday night game, the Cote Selects hosted the Swan Valley Axemen. Special
teams proved to be a factor in this game, as the Axemen chalked up two power play goals with
Lane Shingoose and Kajon McKay in the box in the first period enroute to a 4-1 lead after the
first. However, Cote’s top line of the McKay brothers and Braedon Boschman led a spirited
Selects comeback, with Brennan Watson tying the game at four off a slick faceoff win by Kalium
Gervais. Overtime was looming until Steven Arp sniped the eventual game-winning goal off a
feed from Carter Cockburn, and the Axemen came away with a narrow 5-4 win. Cockburn and
Arp paced the Axemen attack, with Drew Denischuk picking up the W in net. McKay, McKay,
and Boschman were a handful the entire night, with all three players enjoying multiple point
outings. Frazer Farmer settled in after a shaky first period with some big saves, but took the L.
For the record, the shot clock in the new Cote arena showed well over 110 combined shots on
goal for both teams.

Saturday night saw Esterhazy renewing their rivalry with the Churchbridge Imperials. The
Flyers notched two goals in the first period and three goals in the second, carrying a 5-0 lead
into the third period. Midway through the third was the Cole Cusitar incident, and while the Imps
bravely tried to finish the game to honor their captain, eventually the game was called with
about seven minutes left in the third.
In Rocanville, the shorthanded Theodore Buffalos rode into Tigerland to battle the defending
league champs. This game proved to be even more of a seesaw affair than Friday night’s
Esterhazy-Langenburg matchup. The Buffs rocketed out to a 5-1 lead partway through the
second period, but Brett Hope’s shorthanded goal sparked a seven goal rally by the Tigers, with
only a Colby Vranai snipe in response for the Buffs. With the Tigers up 8-6 after two, Theodore
scored three straight goals to take a one goal lead at 9-8. However, Jordan Robertson potted
two goals and Ryan Regel netted the game winner to keep Rocanville undefeated after an 11-9
Tigers victory. Dylan Johnson and Zach McIntyre each had hat tricks for the Buffs, while
Keanan Sperling added four helpers. For Rocanville, Jordan Robertson notched four goals, and

veteran Ryan Regel added two goals and five points. Kieren Madill was the winning goalie for
the Tigers, while Warren Shymko was saddled with the loss for the Buffalos.
The Selects again played host on the evening, as Canora slithered into Badgerville to do battle
with Cote. The Cobras played against type and did not incur one penalty for the entire game,
while the Selects only took three minor penalties. Tied at two after the first period, the Cobras
outscored the Selects by two goals in the second period to take a 6-4 lead into the third.
Canora’s Logan Foster sniped two quick goals at the start of the third period, then rode out a
late comeback attempt by Cote to escape with a 9-6 Cobras win. Derrick Schwartz, Kody
Rock, Brett Duczek, Logan Foster, Tanner Mak, Scott Mickoski, and Carter Dereniwsky all had
multiple point evenings for the snakes. For the Selects, Braedon Boschman continues to prove
that his mitts can deliver goals and punches in bunches, as he had a hat trick and an assist.
Hayden Lacquette was high scorer on the evening with a goal and four assists. Wenden
Shingoose picked up a match penalty for his actions at the end of the game. Frazer Farmer
was in the crease for the Selects, while Brad Sentes recorded the win for Canora.

Sunday had one game, as Wapella journeyed up the 601 to play the Tigers in Rocanville ahead
of the nasty weather. The Tigers were as miserable to the Hawks as the weather was to
everyone outside, skating away with a 9-1 throttling of Wapella. Veterans Ryan Regel and
Stephane Robidoux paced the Tigers offence, as each had four points on the night. Dylan
Haney played setup man, delivering three assists. Evan Armstrong broke up Kieren Madill’s
shutout bid with Wapella’s only goal midway through the third period, assisted by Nathan
Murray.

Upcoming games next weekend include the Highway 9 battle on Friday December 13 th with
Canora in Preeceville, Cote trekking to Theodore to face the Buffalos, and Esterhazy hosting
Wapella. Saturday night features a first place in the South division showdown with Langenburg
at home to host Rocanville, Canora wheeling into Theodore, and Churchbridge visiting Swan
Valley in Minitonas.
