SCWHL to expand to nine teams in 2022-23

A longer regular season, the addition of two new teams and the return of two other teams sidelined in part by the global pandemic highlighted the annual general meeting of the South Coast Women’s Hockey Lague last Sunday.

The league - now at nine teams - approved a 126-game regular season, one which see each team play 28 games. Six teams will qualify for the SCWHL/Provincial Championship Tournament to be played March 24-26, 2023 in Hope, BC.

The SCWHL teams voted to expand their livestream coverage of the championship tournament, agreeing to SportsWave livestreaming the two semi-final games on the Saturday night in addition to the consolation and championship games on Sunday.

The Cowichan Titans and Burnaby Mountain Capitals are the two new entries into the SCWHL. The Titans will be based in Duncan and will play out of the Duncan Community Centre. The Burnaby Mountain Capitals will call Planet Ice – Coquitlam their home ice.

Returning to the SCWHL for the 2022-23 season are the Victoria-based Island Surge and the Kamloops Vibe. The Surge sat out last season due to COVID concerns, while the Vibe were unable to play due to road closures caused by heavy rain and flooding in B.C.’s South Coast region.

Returning to the league are the five Lower Mainland teams which comprised the season a year ago – the Richmond Devils, South Fraser TNT, regular season champion Meadow Ridge Moose, Fraser Valley Jets and the defending provincial champion North Shore Rebels.

The season will begin Thursday, Sept. 29, and conclude Sunday, March 19.
