The Sydney Ice Dogs felt a partnership with a mental health organisation was important to drive awareness, while also providing our Ice Hockey community with the resources, education and platforms to promote positive mental health and support. Research shows every year one in five people in Australia will experience symptoms of mental illness but 60 percent will not seek help.
“In partnership with Black Dog Institute we are confident the Ice Dogs will be able we will help create a mentally healthy world for everyone. It will operate across multiple areas, and we are not shy in promoting the fundraising goal for the season in $50,000” remarks former Ice Dogs captain Scott Stephenson.
First, we will be housing a mental health resource hub on the Ice Dogs website where Black Dog Institute’s research backed collateral, news articles, digital services & apps will be regularly uploaded and freely available for Sydney Ice Dogs members, fans & supporters to access. This hub will be available on our website in the near future. Black Dog Institute will also have this important content playing on the big screen at Macquarie Ice Rink during home games.
Secondly, the Ice Dogs have designed a special game day jersey with Black Dog Institute branding which will be worn in 3 home games in June.
Finally, we will support Black Dog Institute’s fundraising initiatives, such as the One Foot Forward initiative kicking off in October. This campaign is designed to bring the community together to walk in solidarity with people experiencing mental health issues.
Karen Elliff, Director of Funding and Partnerships at Black Dog Institute, said:
“We’re so pleased and thankful to Sydney Ice Dogs for collaborating with us to expand awareness around the importance of mental health. Funds raised through this partnership will help ensure the continuation of our vital research and the delivery of evidence-based programs throughout the community.” Elliff remarked “The community partnership with Sydney Ice Dogs is a wonderful example of the multi-pronged way organisations can engage with Black Dog Institute.”
About the Black Dog Institute
The Black Dog Institute is the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan. Their aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.
They do this through ‘translational’ research. Integrating their research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change.
Their partnerships with people with lived experience, federal, state and local governments, communities, schools, corporate Australia, philanthropists and others in the mental health sector enables them to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it’s needed most.
