Ice Dogs claim vengeance and raise awareness in dominant win over Melbourne

Ice Dogs claim vengeance and raise awareness in dominant win over Melbourne

Nicholas Kabiotis

In a highly significant game ignited by revenge and fueled by a cause close to their hearts, the Sydney Ice Dogs delivered a commanding home ground performance against the Melbourne Ice on Sunday.

With the month of June dedicated to raising funds for mental health research through their partnership with the Black Dog Institute, the Ice Dogs donned special edition Black Jerseys and took to the ice with a vengeance, seeking payback for their previous loss to the Melbourne Ice the weekend before.

In a fiercely contested first period, both teams battled hard. The visitors from Melbourne struck first, but it wasn’t long before the Ice Dogs retaliated on the score sheet, tying the game through their captain, Daniel Pataky. Melbourne continued its offensive pressure and shots, but were stifled by Ice Dogs netminder Jakob Doornbos. The Dogs would find their rhythm as time went on, eventually capping off the period with a go-ahead goal by young gun Dmitri Kuleshov.

The lead heading into the second period proved to be a helpful confidence boost for the Dogs. Capitalising on a power play opportunity, they found the back of the net again with a goal from Pataky only two minutes in. Momentum would continue with the home team as they extended their lead with a goal from veteran import Grant Toulmin, and again through Kuleshov.

The visitors wouldn’t go down without a fight, and managed to get the score line back within two goals. However, the Ice Dogs’ determination would keep them ahead until the final siren, where they secured an emphatic 8-4 victory, following goals from Shannon McGregor, Kyle Hunter and another from Toulmin—his tenth of the season.

It was an impressive team performance for the Ice Dogs. Their offense was firing on all cylinders, amassing a total of eight goals to bounce back from their loss to the Ice in Melbourne the previous week. The power play unit operated with precision, converting on two out of three opportunities. Goaltender Jakob Doornbos stood tall between the pipes, making an astounding 49 saves on 53 shots, displaying remarkable agility and composure.

This win holds significance for the Ice Dogs' as they look to improve their position in the Hellyer ladder  ahead of a crucial matchup against the Perth Thunder this weekend in Sydney. Maintaining  momentum and renewed self-belief will be crucial in what will be a high-stakes clash that could significantly impact playoff hopes for both teams.
