2019-20 Season at a Glance
Tuesday, March 17, 2020 - Submitted by Kirk Holtet

With the unfortunate end to our hockey season, and the hopes of winning the league championship for two teams, I thought it would be prudent to highlight some of the highs and lows of our recently completed season.

1.   This was the first time in league history that the Vanberg Cup was not presented.

2.   This season's final series was the first in league history that pitted the #3 and #4 seeds.

3.   This year's finals were only the 2nd time in league history that the 1st place team did not advance to the league finals since 1999-2000 when 3rd place in the south Grande Cache Rockies defeated 2nd place in the north Slave Lake Winterhawks.  Grande Cache remains the only NCHL team to win the Vanberg Cup with a losing record in the regular season.

4.   For the first time since 2015-16 the league announced first/second team allstars as well as the annual awards winners.

5.   The NCHL had representation at ~80-90% of our regular season games, and very close to 100% at our playoff matchups.

6.   We welcomed the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs and said goodbye to the Whitecourt Wild.

7.   Morinville Kings won their first league regular season championship.

8.   Daysland competed in their 5th consecutive league final series.

9.   Red Deer appeared in their first league finals - advancing one step further than last year's semi final exit.

10.  We saw the Northstars and the Rustlers qualify to participate in this year's Senior AA Provincials in Lethbridge, that were unfortunately cancelled.

11.   We saw the Sylvan Lake Pirates move to Blackfalds as the Sr Wranglers.

12. We saw the Eckville Eagles move to Lacombe and eventually change their name to the Lacombe AA Generals.

13.  We saw a beautiful new arena in Morinville.

14.  We saw 4 teams battle it out for 1st place overall right down to the final regular season weekend.

15.  We saw a game what was one of the highlights of Roger's Hometown Hockey in Red Deer, played at the new Servus Arena.

16.  We saw the first NCHL games in Fort Saskatchewan, Lacombe and Blackfalds.

17.  We saw Hockey Alberta award the 2020-21 Alberta Senior AA Hockey Provincial tournament to the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs.

18.  Morinville opened the season with an 8 game win streak.

19.  Westlock closed the season with a 10 game losing streak.

20.  For the first time in recent memory there were no forfeited games.

21.  We only had one weekend of nasty weather that caused 3 games to be re-scheduled.

22.  Penalty minutes across the league were up about 10%.

23.  Goals scored were up about 10%.

24.  The best hot dogs in the league are in Daysland!  Next in line Penhold and Devon.

25.  The best arenas (in my opinion) to watch a game are Morinville, Lacombe (see #26) and if you like to be close to the action - Daysland.  Sorry, I haven't been to Westlock or Bonnyville yet.

26.  Am I the only one who thinks Lacombe's goal celly horn is on the loud side?  I've got hearing loss and I still need to plug my ears when that thing goes off!   Earplugs recommended!

27.  The best pre-game entrance music/announcements is in Morinville.

We appreciate the fan support from all communites over the course of the season, and thank all of the volunteers, coaches, managers, trainers, therapists, players and sponsors needed to run each of the hockey teams.  It's people like those that keep the teams and league functioning.  We hope everyone gets through this Covid-19 episode and their lives get back to normal as soon as possible.  Have a safe and enjoyable summer!  See you again in the fall.
