August 24, 2009 RANGERS KNOCKED OUT |
The Etobicoke Rangers after being rained out on Saturday began and ended their 2009 Playoff run yesterday. The Rangers ended up having to play 3 games yesterday. The day began @ 10am in Burlington as the Rangers were up against the 2nd place Oakville A's. The Rangers sent their big game pitcher to the mound in Mike Janes and Jane's responded with a complete game victory as the Rangers held on to win the game 4-3. The Rangers jumped on the A's starter and scored 3 in the top of the 1st. The A's got one back in the 2nd but the Rangers went up 4-1 in the 3rd only to see the A's score again their half to close the gap to 4-2. In the bottom of the 7th the A's narrowed the score to 4-3 but with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out the A's tried a suicide squeeze. The batter popped it up and Ranger 3rd baseman Curtis Saunders made a game saving catch as he dove for the ball and made the catch. He then easily tagged out the runner and the Rangers won 4-3. Janes scattered 10 hits and struck out 6 Oakville batters to earn the win. The Rangers were held to 5 hits with C Jason Crocker and 1B A.J. Iafrate each had 2 while 2B Mark Capone had the other. The Rangers now had to face the Milton Red Sox @ 1:30 and this game was a pitchers dual with the Milton side ending up with an extra inning 2-0 victory. The Rangers started Kevin Breitner and Breitner pitched his best game of the year as he held the Red Sox to only 3 hits over the 1st 7 innings. In the 8th after the 1st batter struck out Breitner walked the next hitter and then the play of the game. Milton's Taylor Lawton hit a deep fly ball to right center and as Ranger CF Peter Saweczko went back to make the catch the ball hit his glove and then went over the fence giving the Milton team a walk off 2 run home run. The Red Sox pitcher Adam Ahearn also pitched a complete game holding the Rangers to just one hit and that came in the very 1st inning off the bat off 2B Mark Capone. With the loss the Rangers now had to play @ 6pm @ 9th Line against the Glanbrook Grizzlies. The winner of this game would advance to the final 4 next weekend and the loser was finished for the year. The Rangers wasted no time in scoring in this one as they collected 7 hits and scored 5 runs in the 1st inning off of Grizzlie starter Chris Cooney. RBI's by CF Peter Saweczko, 3B Todd Riverso, RF Kyle Breitner and !B Mike Janes staked the Rangers to an early 5-0 lead. The Rangers seemed prepared to sit on this lead as Ranger pitcher Curtis Saunders held the Grizzlies in check until the 4th when the Grizzlies closed the gap to 5-1. Then in the 6th inning the Grizzlies put up 3 more runs to make it 5-4 and then on a costly Ranger throwing error which was followed by a base hit to score the tying and go ahead runs giving the Grizzlies a 6-5 lead. The Rangers did get 2 on in the bottom of the 7th but could not get the tying run in and the season was over. The Rangers finished the season with an overall record of 25 wins 23 losses and 1 tie. |

August 24, 2008 GRIZZLIES ELIMINATE RANGERS |
The Glanbrook Grizzlies eliminated the Etobicoke Rangers yesterday from the 2008 COBA MAJOR LEAGUE Playoffs by a 9-6 score. The Rangers opened the Playoff Tournament by getting drilled by the Milton Red Sox 14-6. The Rangers rebounded in Game 2 as they beat the Dundas Chiefs 11-6 and before advancing to the Glanbrook game the Rangers were credited a win as the Misissauga North Tigers forfeited. The Playoff run for the Rangers was no different this year than the rest of the games played this year. Inconsistent pitching, defence and hitting continued. There were some bright lights this season as Pitcher Shawn Silk just seems to get better and the acquisition of C Matt Ferreria more than solidified the catchers position. P Kevin Breitner emerged as a bona fide Senior pitcher this year as Kevin used primarily as a reliever in previous seasons was put in the rotation and was quite effective. The Rangers based on their overall season record of 22-17 will look to vastly improve the look of the club for next season if they want to get back into the upper echelon of teams as quality pitching, speed and youth will be at the top of the recruiting list. Thanks to all for your support and have a safe winter and we'll see you next year. For tryout information please contact the Field Manager Steve Breitner @ steve.breitner@buzztime.com |

The St. Catharine's Metro's snapped the Etobicoke Rangers league win streak at 6 last evening as they defeated the Rangers 5-3. The Metro's re-captured the lead in the bottom of the 6th when the Metro's cleanup hitter hit a 2 run shot off of Ranger starter Mike Anderson. Troy Hamilton came on to get the Rangers out of a 2 men on base jam. The Rangers came right back and tied the game in the 7th as Anthony Davis scored on a Pete Saweczko single and CF Rob Borden scored on a Sac Fly from Rob Vecchiarelli. The Metro's regained the lead in their half of the 7th as Hamilton issued a couple of walks and gave up 2 base hits. Mark Eccleton came on for Hamilton and surrendered a double to the first batter he faced scoring both Metro's runners. The Rangers in their last at bats had the tying runs on 2nd and 3rd only to have Ranger cleanup hitter Rob Vecchiarelli hit a long fly ball to end the game. The Rangers next game will be this Friday night as they will play the Ajax Spartans in the Hap Walters Memorial Tournament in St. Catharines. The other Ranger opponents in this tournament are the St. Clair Riverbats and the Newmarket Hawks. The Rangers were finalists last year and were the tournament winners in 2002. All 16 participating teams this weekend will also be competing in 2 weeks at the Senior Elimination Tournament being held in Courtright. Should be a great weekend of Baseball. Best of Luck to the Rangers. |

The Rangers increased their lead as they scored a run in the fifth, added 2 more in the 6th and then exploded for 6 in the 8th to end the game. July 4, 2005 Rangers lose in Semi-Finals |
The Etobicoke Rangers took part in the Rick Wiseman Memorial Tournament this past weekend in Windsor and made it to the final 4. The Rangers by winning their division which was made up of The Detroit Metro Tigers, The Richter Rosin Orioles and the Tecumseh Thunder advanced to the semi finals only to run into a very experienced veteran team from Flint Michigan. The Flint team scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and added single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings to defeat the Rangers 6-0. Mike Janes was saddled with the loss. To the Rangers credit they beat 2 very good teams from Michigan to advance to the semi's. On Friday night behind Roman Kula the Rangers defeated the Metro Tigers 1-0 as Kula spun a 5 hitter. The Rangers scored the winning run in extra innings as Ranger 2nd baseman Anthony Davis scored the games only run on a wild pitch. Next up for the Rangers was the other Michigan team the Orioles and once again a pitchers duel evolved. Etobicoke starter and winner Mark Eccleton pitched a 1 hitter as the Rangers were 2-1 winners. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the 1st as the Rangers committed 2 errors after Eccleton gave up a 1 out walk. The Rangers tied the score in the 2nd and took the lead in the 5th inning as Ranger 3rd baseman Rob Vecchiarelli hit a long sacrifice fly to score Ranger SS Ryan Croucher. With this win the Rangers were 2-0 and had a guarantee into Sunday's Semi-Final. They then played their 3rd game of the round robin against long time foe the Tecumseh Thunder. The Thunder were already eliminated as they were 0-2. With the game meaningless to both sides the Rangers and Thunder put on a good show but it was the Thunder who came away with the win 4-3 as they scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th on a throwing error by the Rangers 3rd baseman. Veteran Ranger reliever Jon Kielb was pinned with the loss. The Rangers now return to league play this Friday night @ Connorvale as the Rangers play host to the Glanbrook Grizzlies. Game time is 7:45 |

Centrefielder Rob Borden had a 3 run HR and scored 4 runs and 1st baseman A.J. Iafrate also had a 2 run dinger and scored 3 runs. February 23, 2005 JURY STILL OUT |
AFTER SATURDAY'S MEETING AMONGST THE SENIOR A MANAGERS, OBA BOARD MEMBERS AND THE PRESIDENT OF THUNDER BAY BASEBALL SEVERAL THINGS BECAME QUITE CLEAR. 15 SENIOR A TEAMS WERE IN ATTENDANCE AND AFTER THUNDER BAY MADE THEIR PRESENTATION AND ANSWERED QUESTIONS ALL 15 TEAMS WHEN POLLED PUBLICALLY STATED THAT THEY WILL NOT TRAVEL TO THUNDER BAY. THE OBA COULD NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION ABOUT THE BID FROM COURTRIGHT AND WHY THEY WERE NOT CONSIDERED EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD A BID IN PLACE TO HOST. THUNDER BAY IS NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT IS BEST FOR SENIOR A BASEBALL AS IT WAS QUITE CLEAR THAT THEIR MOTIVE FOR HOSTING WAS TO MAKE MONEY FOR THUNDER BAY BASEBALL, TO HELP THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND TO HELP WITH THEIR OWN BASEBALL PROGRAM. THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SENT A TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF THIS TOURNAMENT TO PARTICIPATE DID NOT SIT WELL WITH THE A TEAMS. WE ARE LED TO BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE WILL BE RESOLVED SOON AND WE ARE HOPING THAT COMMON SENSE WILL PREVAIL. THIS WEB SITE WILL PUBLISH NEWS ON THIS ISSUE AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE |
| |
February 17, 2005 SENIOR "A" TEAMS TO MEET WITH O.B.A. |
THIS COMING SATURDAY FEBRUARY 19TH THE SENIOR "A" MANAGERS FROM ACROSS THE PROVINCE WILL GATHER AT THE O.B.A. OFFICES IN CAMBRIDGE TO MEET WITH OFFICIALS FROM THE O.B.A. WITH REGARDS TO THE AWARDMENT OF THE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT TO THUNDER BAY. AS MOST FOLLOWERS OF SENIOR "A" BASEBALL IN THIS PROVINCE ARE AWARE THE ALLOCATION OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS TOURNAMENT THAT THIS PROVINCE HAS TO OFFER NEEDS TO BE AWARDED TO A LOCATION THAT IS REACHABLE FOR THE TEAMS INVOLVED. THE MANAGERS ARE VERY HOPEFUL THAT AN ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION CAN BE FOUND. AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW 14 OF THE 18 PARTICIPANTS FROM LAST YEARS TOURNEY HAVE DECIDED THAT THE TRIP TO THUNDER BAY WOULD NOT BE FEASIBLE AND THEREFORE WILL NOT BE ATTENDING. THE OUTCOME OF SATURDAYS MEETING WILL BE UPDATED HERE EARLY NEXT WEEK. |

September 2, 2004 NO MEDAL FOR ETOBICOKE |
The Etobicoke Rangers failed to pick up a medal at the Nationals this past week in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Rangers finished the 4 game game round robin at 2-2 which placed them 3rd in their division and earned them a cross over playoff game. The Rangers opened the tournament losing 7-2 to Nova Scotia. They then defeated Team Newfoundland 4-2. Next up was Team Saskatchewan and the Rangers were shutout 3-0. The Etobicoke side then defeated the host Moncton Mets 8-1 to advance to the playoff round and faced Team Quebec. Quebec defeated the Rangers in the playoff game 2-0. The Rangers were defeated by MEDAL winning teams only. The Rangers strength all season has been their pitching and at the Canadians this did not change as the Etobicoke team came away with the second best overall ERA at the tournament. As pitching was the strength their hitting had been their achilles heel and this did not change either as the Rangers as a team batted only .226. Congratulations to the players and fans who stood behind this team all season!! For all the tournament details please click onto the Links and visit ETOBICOKE AT THE NATIONALS. |
