The KJHL season has officially kicked off. Over the past weekend, the NCN Flames played host to the OCN Storm for two games at the Gilbert McDonald Arena in Nelson House. The defending regular season champion NCN Flames would look to continue their quest for another regular season title.
Saturday - the game kicked off with some player introductions, and a touching ceremony honouring former NCN Flames player Jonathon Saunders. The OCN Storm would start the game hot, potting two first period goals. Troy Head would open the season scoring, and Blaine Dorion would follow suit two minutes later. They would add a second period goal off the stick of Sheldon Chartier, and Nolan Sinclair Jr. would shut the door the rest of the way with 34 saves for the shutout victory.
Sunday - the NCN Flames would start off strong, not wanting a repeat of Saturday. Logan Primrose, Keistin Saunders and Diego Redhead would trot the Flames out to an early 3-0 first period lead. The Storm would flip the script in the second, with Chavez Constant potting two goals and Conroy Halcrow adding a single to send the teams to the intermission tied at 3. The third period would see the teams race to the finish in combining for six third period goals. Daemon Titterton and Wesley Beardy (on the PP) would score early, but the Flames would finish strong adding goals from Jase Robinson (shorthanded) Saunders and Primrose with their second of the night, and Jody Spence would add an insurance marker that would get the Flames a much-needed weekend split in a 7-5 victory.
Next weekend's schedule will see the Flames hit the road to Peguis as the Juniors will open their 2021-2022 schedule at home for a weekend double header. The Storm will again be on the road, taking on the Cross Lake Islanders for a weekend double header in Cross Lake. Games are Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 1:30pm respectively.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
As the President of the Keystone Junior Hockey League, ahead of the start of a new season, I would like to acknowledge all of the hard work of the KJHL Executive Board, all of the team Governors, General Managers and Coaches on a job well done these past couple of seasons and the importance of keeping Junior Hockey alive and well in the North for our younger generation. The level of competition each team brings makes for exciting hockey, and any team can beat any team on any given night. We are excited for the start of a new season!
