The Sydney Ice Dogs are very proud to announce the signing of Canadian import forward Stefan Fournier. Standing at 6'4" and weighing 100kg, Fournier is a formidable presence on the ice and brings a wealth of experience to the Ice Dogs. Fournier began his hockey career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he played for four seasons.
During his time in the QMJHL, Fournier scored 101 goals and 111 assists for a total of 212 points in 289 games. He also helped lead the Halifax Mooseheads to both the QMJHL and the Memorial Cup championships in the 2012-2013 season, playing alongside future NHL stars Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, and MacKenzie Weegar. Fournier also led the QMJHL playoffs in goals that year.
After winning the Memorial Cup, Fournier signed a three-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens in 2013-2014. He split his time between the American Hockey League (AHL) and the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during his time with the Canadiens organization. In 2016, Fournier was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in a multi-player deal that also involved the infamous John Scott.
Fournier earned another NHL contract in 2016, this time with the Arizona Coyotes organization. He eventually ended up with the Tampa Bay Lightning, but he has primarily played in the AHL and ECHL, amassing 142 games, 312 PIMs and 23 points in the AHL over four years and 183 points (99 goals and 84 assists) in 289 games in the ECHL.
“Thrilled doesn’t even begin to describe the excitement that this signing brings to the Sydney Ice Dogs and the Sydney Hockey Community. Other teams have had NHL draft picks and these players have helped them both on and off the ice. With Stefan though he has a genuine interest in making the team and club better both on and off the ice. As a coach I am excited to see how he can also help behind the scenes and collaborate with the staff. Anytime you get a player with Stefan’s pedigree they lift the standard of skill of everyone around them. I am confident Stefan will be a game-changer for this organisation” Says Head Coach Jason Kvisle
In recent years, Fournier has used his hockey skills to travel the world, making stops in Slovakia and Cardiff before joining the Sydney Ice Dogs later this year after he finishes with the Allen Americans of the ECHL.
“I am excited to be heading to Sydney for the upcoming season, looking forward to meeting the fans and bringing back a championship” says Fournier
The Ice Dogs are thrilled to have him on board and are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team. Fournier's size and experience should make him a valuable addition to the Ice Dogs, who are always looking to improve and compete for the AIHL championship.
