Swingers Win! Nuggets Finally Lose!
- Submitted by
The Swingers (10-9-0) halted any talk of a Perfect Season, and also put an end to an incredible streak of 23 wins in a row (dating back to last season's playoffs) by beating the Bistro Westminster Nuggets (16-1-0) 12-11 at Kirwan Park Wednesday night.

Nuggets Pitcher Jesse Shea-Cowper struggled with his control all game, but it was most apparent in the first, as he pretty much walked the bases loaded. Mitch Katz grounded to short, where Adam O'Brien-Locke gunned down the lead runner at home, keeping it locked at nil. However the Swingers capped off their impressive first inning in "grand" style as Outfielder Corey Fleischer with the bases juiced, and 2 away, lifted a Shea-Cowper offering over the left field wall making it a 4-0 game after the top of the first.

The Nuggets quickly replied with two of their own in the bottom of the inning, as last year's Captain's League MVP Anthony Di Mambro blasted his 7th homer of the season, and 5th bomb in his last 3 games over the fence in left.

Swingers Pitcher Sub 1 (Tyson Taylor) made up for his cookie to Di Mambro half an inning later, as he led off the inning with a solo blast of his own, making the score 5-2 after two.

With the score 7-4 Swingers after 5 and a half complete, the Nuggets surged through for three runs in the bottom of the 6th, two coming off the bat of Nuggets Outfielder Alex Schneider's 10th homer of the season, and one off a game tying RBI single by Elvio Cesari. Nick Schneider then doubled with one down but a base coaching blunder by Captain O'Brien-Locke forced Cesari into a rundown between 3rd and home, which ended badly for the Nuggets. Mike Zagari then flied out to right and that was that.

In the seventh, and the score tied at 7, Shea-Cowper ran into trouble again, walking Brad Fiederer with the bases loaded, and two down, giving the Swingers the lead once again.

The top of the 8th inning proved costly for The Nuggets as well, as Shea-Cowper's control issues, couple with some lackadaisical play from their defense allowed The Swingers to score four in the inning to bring the score to 12-7 Swingers. That's not to say The Swingers hitters didn't come out to play that inning. The 8th also featured a key double by Enrik Brassard, a Katz single that drove in two, along with a Sac Fly by the .828 hitting Kirk Poulos.

Swingers Captain Nick Dykler had to hold his breath in fear as a last inning defensive meltdown allowed the Nuggets to take extra bases galore on a lead off single by Nick Schneider, then Zagari and Adam Casey getting on. O'Brien-Locke kept the comeback alive with a 3 run blast to left center, bringing the Nuggets to within one of tying it up. Jesse Gouldson then sent a fly to left, at which point The Swingers Left Fielder (insert name here) slipped and fell, allowing the ball to drop in for a single. The Nuggets then substituted Gouldson for the speedy Zagari (fastest of the previous 3 hitters for sure).

Leadoff hitter Adam Ferguson knocked a bouncer to 2nd, which Brassard promptly bobbled to put the tying run in scoring position with nobody out and the recently hot hitting Shea-Cowper at the plate. Shea-Cowper sent a bullet down the line, Swingers 3B Poulos nabbed it backhand styles, then gunned the drifting Zagari out at 2nd. All of a sudden it's 12-11 Swingers, with 2 down and a runner on 1st. Alex Schneider stepped in and powered a deep shot down the line. No one doubted that it had the distance, unfortunately for the Nuggets, gravity forced it foul and its result was simply a long strike. Then, Schneider went after the following pitch, and skied it high, 5 feet in front of home plate.

Game over. Swingers win 12-11 after 8 complete.
