Chilliwack Chiefs
Clippers edge Chiefs in overtime
The Chilliwack Chiefs paid a price for success, losing 2-1 in overtime to the Nanaimo Clippers at Prospera Centre.

The home team came into the game missing top guns Jordan Kawaguchi, Vimal Sukumaran and Dennis Cholowski along with rookies Kohen Olischefski and Matteo Esposito — all of them away at a World Junior A Challenge tryout camp.

This game was scoreless through the entire first period and most of the second, until Zach Giuttari finally broke the ice. Netting his second goal in as many games, the rookie defenceman took a pass from Mitch Skapski and beat Nanaimo goalie Evan Johnson with a wrister from the point.

Less than two minutes later, at 14:27, the Clippers equalized on a goal by Devin Brosseau.

Sheldon Rempel drew the assist, picking up a loose puck behind the Chilliwack net and slipping a pass into the goal-mouth.

Brosseau bang-banged it into the cage for his 12th of the year.

Chillwack had the best chance to settle this one in regulation time, thanks to some hot-headed retaliation from Nanaimo’s Charley Borek.

Midway through period three, Chiefs D-man Mark Esposito delivered an undetected cross-check to the back of Borek. The Clippers forward responded by delivering the same to Esposito’s face, drawing blood and a five minute major for a blow to the head.

Borek was tossed from the game, Chilliwack went to the power play but without their man advantage mainstays they had plenty of pressure but couldn’t light the lamp.

With 22.7 seconds left in the first overtime period, Nanaimo finally got the winner.

Yanni Kaldis fed a pass across the slot to Matthew Hoover, who popped the puck past Pelino for his 24th of the year and the OT win.

The three stars were Johnson (first), Hoover (second) and Pelino (third).

The Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game was Linden Hora.

Attendance was 2,304.
