Sask West

On Friday night in Kindersley, the Klippers hosted the Edam 3 Stars, with the home team coming away with a big 5-3 win.

Shayne Neigum opened the scoring just past the 7-minute mark of the opening frame, with Brody Ryberg adding to the lead just 30 seconds later. Owen LaClare would cut the deficit to 2-1, but Neigum would restore the 2-goal cushion for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Markus Boguslavsky and Jared Blaquiere would trade goals in the 2nd for a 4-2 Klippers lead. In the third, Kyle Donaldson would extend it to 5-2, but Jordan Fransoo would score his first of the year to cut the lead, but it was as close as they would get.

Taryn Kotchorek stopped 24 of 29 shots in the loss, while Logan Drackett stopped 60 of 63 shots in the win.

Also on Friday, the Asquith Admirals headed west for a matchup at the Jube with the Biggar Nationals. Biggar came away with a 7-3 win.

Noah Gowen and Jonathan Redlick scored in the first period for a 2-0 Nats lead. Taylor Bucsis and Redlick extended the lead to 4-0 before Linden McCorrister cut into the deficit, all before the 3-minute mark of the middle period. Noah Gowen would fire his second of the night into the twine for a 5-1 lead, but McCorrister would claw his team closer again. Presley Toth and Redlick’s hattrick goal ballooned the lead to 7-2 after 40 minutes. Parker Olson scored the only goal of the third to round out scoring.

Carter Woodside stopped 58 of 65 shots in the loss, while Josh Hawkins stopped 27 of 30 shots in the win.

On Saturday night, the Wilkie Outlaws travelled south to play the Kindersley Klippers. Wilkie came away with the 6-3 come from behind victory.

It was all Klippers in the first, as Shayne Neigum, Jaxon Georget and Troy Boisjoli all scored for a 3-0 home team lead. In the middle stanza, the Outlaws started their comeback, with Blake Young and Carter Wakelin scoring to cut the lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes. In the third, it was still all Outlaws as Rory Gregoire tied it, and Kaleb Cey scoring twice in 5 minutes to give Wilkie the 5-3 lead. Cody Roy would secure the victory with an empty net goal.

Joel Gryzbowski takes the win, stopping 32 of 25 shots, while Logan Drackett stopped 34 of 39 shots in the loss.

Also on Saturday, the Edam 3 Stars opened the doors for the Asquith Admirals but were rude hosts in a 14-0 drubbing.

Jaxon Penner, Mitch Wall, Joel Blaquiere, Owen LaClare, Keegan Tiringer and Josh Longstaff all scored in the first. Owen Latendresse, Wall, Jared Blaquiere, Brady Deobald and Longstaff scored second period goals. Deobald (2) and Marc LaClare finished off scoring.

Evan Vanderveer stopped 75 of 89 shots in the loss, while Taryn Kotchorek took the win, stopping all 10 shots in two periods of action. Forward Damon Schaefer suited up in goalie equipment and played the third, stopping all 4 shots he faced. Sidenote: Admirals usual starter Carter Woodside played out as forward.

In another Saturday night contest, the Biggar Nationals played at home against the Macklin Mohawks, with the visitors leaving with a 5-3 win.

Noah Gowen and Chase Close exchanged opening period goals for a draw after 20 minutes.  Brody Vogel and Kayler Gidluck would give the Nats the 3-1 lead, but the Mohawks fought back. Jesse Gartner, Hunter Steinhubel and Dalton Scherger all scored in a 7-minute span, giving Macklin the 4-3 lead after two periods. H. Steinhubel would seal the victory with a late empty net goal.

Owen Bosch stopped 36 of 39 shots in the win, while Josh Hawkins stopped 27 of 31 shots in the loss.

Cross Roads

On Friday night, the Luseland Mallards travelled east for a matchup against the Kerrobert Tigers. The home squad came away with the 6-4 win.

Scoring was tough to come by in the first two periods, as Darin Sperling (13:36 of the 1st) and Matthew Roblin (PPG; 5:32 of the 2nd) gave the Tigers the 2-0 lead. The floodgates broke wide open in the third, with Rylan Borschneck starting things off by extending the lead to 3-0. Joel Dewald would break through for the Mallards, but Drake McKinnon and Emery Cholin would widen the gap to 5-1. Steve Gottfried would again cut into the deficit; however, Taylor Neumeier countered to keep the gap at 4. Kyle Heintz scored twice in the final 5 minutes to bring the lead down; it was too little too late.

Avery Kohlman stopped 55 of 61 shots in the loss, while Ryland Richmond took the win, stopping 28 of 32 shots.

On Saturday, the Rosetown Redwings played host to the Unity Miners. Rosetown came away with a tough 4-3 win.

Jordan Johnston (SHG) and Kane Dube gave the Wings the 2-0 lead, but Brayden Schultz (SHG) cut the lead to 2-1 after 20 minutes. Mitchell Robbie scored the only goal of the middle stanza for a 3-1 Rosetown lead. Johnston would extend the lead to 4-1, and they needed all the insurance as Dalyn McCubbing and Hunter Sperle scored in the final 7 minutes but could not find the equalizer.

Noah Gumpinger stopped 13 of 17 shots in the loss, while Noah Martens stopped 22 of 25 shots in the win.

In the Sunday nighter, the Kindersley Kodiaks hosted the Luseland Mallards. Results were not available at this time.

History Lesson

The last week and a bit, the resurgence of the Viking Cup happened in Camrose, Alberta. It was a pretty prestigious tournament that happened from 1980 to 2010, hosting collegiate teams, as well as U18 teams from various countries. The Viking cup was born from the excitement of the Camrose Lutheran College coming from absolute left field to win the first ever Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national tournament in 1975. Let us narrow our focus to the 1989/1990 Viking Cup, but not necessarily the tourney itself. Czechoslovakia sent over a U18 team known as the CSSR Junior Selects to play, and during their exhibition schedule, they played two games against the Wild Goose All-Stars. One game was played in Wilkie, and one in Kindersley. Check out next week’s column where we dig through Wilkie Press and Kindersley Clarion archives to see what they said about the event.
