Handball League Aotearoa (HLA) has announced the introduction of a new Finals Player Eligibility Policy, reinforcing its commitment to high-performance competition, fair play, and the growth of handball across Aotearoa.
The policy outlines clear eligibility requirements for players participating in the League Final, balancing the need for competitive integrity with inclusive development. One of its key features is a pathway specifically designed to support New Zealand players, allowing up to three citizens to count toward the minimum squad requirement even if they haven’t met the standard game threshold—provided they participate in the Finals Weekend.
“As we continue to build a strong handball community across the country, this policy is about recognising commitment, supporting local talent, and ensuring the final represents the very best of our league,” said Karl Fitzpatrick, a spokesperson for the HLA committee.
Highlights of the new policy include:
Teams must field at least seven players who have played four or more matches during the season.
NZ citizens can qualify with participation in Finals Weekend (two matches), with a cap of three counting toward the seven-player requirement.
Exceptions are available for players impacted by injury, pregnancy, or special circumstances, with committee approval.
This initiative underscores HLA’s dual focus on excellence and accessibility, acknowledging the sport’s developing nature in New Zealand while holding firm on the values of season-long engagement and fairness.
