Hat tricks for Piper and McLaughlin open the Oval X-Treme season on home ic
- Submitted by

The Calgary Oval X-Treme won their WWHL home opener 6-0 against the Strathmore Rockies with a hat trick a piece for Olympic gold medalist Cherie Piper and former Edmonton Chimo Karen McLaughlin.

“We have consistent scoring from all three of our lines,” said X-Treme Head Coach Bjorn Kinding. “It is great to see that our team can share the work load equally.”

Piper, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in 2002 and 2006, scored a goal each period with two assists from fellow Olympian Gina Kingsbury and Rebecca Russell. McLaughlin’s goals, also one-per-period, were all assisted by line mate Kaley Hall.

This game now puts McLaughlin and Piper in third and fourth place for points in the WWHL.  Teammate Kingsbury is in the lead with nine points (five goals and four assists) and Hall is second with four goals and four assists.

X-Treme rookie goalie Kendall Newall was in net, making 13 saves and logged her first shutout as an X-Treme. Rockies’ goalie, former Olympian Lesley Reddon, made 50 saves and was Strathmore’s player of the game.

“It is great to see that we have two very strong goaltenders,” added Kinding. X-Treme goalie Amanda Tapp and Newell have each played two of the four regular season games played so far.

The next Calgary Oval X-Treme game is at home against the BC Breakers during the Olympic Oval Halloween Chiller event on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, featuring Halloween intermission games and activities. The puck drops at 4 p.m. and anyone wearing a Halloween costume has free entry to the game and to public skating (2 – 10 p.m.).

Saturday’s game will also feature raising the 2008 WWHL Championship banner over the Oval X-Treme’s home rink at the Olympic Oval. This is the fifth league title for the X-Treme who were initial members to the league five seasons ago. After the X-Treme/Breakers game, fans are welcome to stay and watch the University of Calgary Dinos women’s team take on N.A.I.T. starting at 7:30 p.m.

For all X-Treme home games, tickets can be purchased before or on game day at the Olympic Oval Front Desk; adults $8, children $4.
