Playoff Pairings Are Set

After the Astros won a pre-emptive coin flip, they sobered up the Brew Crew 13-5 in Thursday's opener to finalize next week's quarterfinal playoff match-ups, which will be as follows:

Mon. 7:15: #7 Mets @ #2 Astros

Mon. 8:30: #8 Expos @ #1 Twins

Tue. 7:15: #5 Yankees @ #4 Pirates

Tue. 8:30: #6 A's # 3 Brewers

July 18, 2022
Last Week of Regular Season
With the playoffs only a week away, 5 of the 8 seeds are still undecided. The Pirates have clinched the #4 spot and will play the #5 Yankees. The Twins will be the top seed if they beat the #8 Expos or the Brewers lose to the Astros. If the Brewers either win over the Astros or lose and win a coin flip they will get the #2 slot. The Mets will end up 6th with a win over the Yankees or if the Angels lose to the Pirates.

The playoffs will commence with quarterfinal matchups on Monday, July 25th & Tuesday the 26th; the semi-finals will follow on Wednesday and the Championship Game will be on Thursday at 7:30.

July 24, 2021

UMPIRES
Umpires? Gentlemen, this your league. It has run successfully for 30 years with volunteer umpires. We need more people to step up and share in the duties. Tuesday Al Grayson, Wednesday Pat Villano. That means we need help every week as follows, Monday, Thursday the plate, Wednesday the bases. Lacking umpires teams will self umpire as I have done in two of my games. Alternatively, we can explore doubling the costs to get paid umpires who will not be better , but will change the league markedly. Jim Conway

Jack Lucey RIP
Jack Lucey passed away on Saturday, July 25,2009. He will be waked at Beaugards on Monday night, 7-9, and Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral is Wednesday morning. Jack was one of the founding members of the league. The old timers will remember him as a shortstop with great quickness. Newer players will know how lucky he was to have been manager of the Red Sox team which has included all three sons. His managerial record includes several playoff titles, always as a low seed, including the dreaded eighth seed. On Broadway, they dim the lights to honor one who's passing leaves a gap which cannot be filled. So it is with our league as we give our collective condolences to his wife and family. May he rest in peace. Jim

If you wish to help let me know. Jim

The following is from Umpire Master Scheduler Don "I do not work at CB's" Vanderbeck: We are in desperate NEED of umpires. We have the regulars, Al "tues nite", and Pat "Wed early" but will need guys to step up to fill the remaining two slots each week and replacement for when the regulars go on vacation or have enough of the griping from the "recreational" players in our RECREATIONAL LEAGUE. Umpires are needed for next Monday and Thursday - both games are at 8:15. Editor's Note: Any player is eligible to umpire (ok, almost any player K Train). Please contact Don at ramapovb@aol.com if you're able to help either next week or later in the season.

Al Hein
As many of you have already learned Al Hein passed away Saturday, May 23. Al was active in the league for many years as a player---a crafty, competitive lefty pitcher---commentator---he enjoyed watching and studying the hitters to get an edge whenever possible--- and assisting with the playoff grilling even after he stopped playing in the league. He was also active in his church, was President of the RE Republican Party and as vice-chairman of the planning board. He is to be waked Thursday, May 28, from to 2 to 4 PM and from 7 to 9 PM. His sole survivor is his sister Janet. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Grace Lutheran Church for its new organ fund. I will miss his presence but will fondly remember how much Al enjoyed being part of this league. Jim Conway

Wood Bat Survey
The Commissioner is conducting a non-binding referendum on the wood bat experiment. Three options have presented themselves. 1. No change in the present rules. 2. Special situations, such as requiring wood bats only to be used at the middle school games. 3. Wood bats only league. Let me know. Any decision to change would be made only after wide consultation and with as much lead time prior to next year's season as possible.

YANKEES AWAKEN FROM SLUMBER TO SHOCK TWINS
After somnambulating (Rhino's word for the day) through the first 4 innings of their contest against the aged Twins, the Yankees overcame a 9 run deficit by erupting for 11 runs in the top of the 5th, and somehow managed to hold for a 19-17 victory last night. The Twins scored all 17 of their runs in the first 3 innings, as Donnie "9 Toes" Vanderbeck led the early assault with a home run and bases clearing triple. Unfortunately for the Twins, they forgot to bring enough Ben-Gay to last the whole game and didn't score any more runs. The Yankees sensed that the Twins were running out of gas, (as well as feeling gassy) since the early game interefered with nap time, and the Yankees took advantage in the fateful 5th inning, which began in an inauspicious manner as Pete "I Want to be Like Jose and Bat Lefty" Vanderbeck grounded out to second. But after numerous well-placed hits and a few Yankee-like defensive lapses, the damage had been done and the once insurmountable 9 run lead had been wiped out. George O'Connell had some key hits for the Yankees in the victory, and Tony "Please Don't Hate Me Because I Live Near No-Knees" Dimitriadis sparked the squad with several stellar defensive plays. The Twins are looking to bolster their roster after this devastating defeat and have been scouting some rookies: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007/05/31/2007-05-31_a_league_of_their_groan.html

PREVIEW OF THIS WEEK'S GAMES
Due to Memorial Day there are only 3 games on the docket this week, but each has its own intrigue to pique the interest of the common man (aka the former Mr. .500). Tonight the surging Angels look to extend their recent winning ways as they take on the beleaguered Mets, who hope to have enough players to field a full squad for a refreshing change. Sgt. Spidey's gracious offer to let players turn on his siren has not yet paid dividends. Tomorrow night it's the battle of Chicken Parm vs. Lentil Soup, as the Jenny Craig All-Stars, aka the Yankees, take on the Geritol Geriatrics, who also go by the moniker "Twins", in an early match-up at the Middle School, where many of the Twins enjoyed academic success during the Truman Administration. Rounding out the week's contests is a battle between the tumultuous Cardinals (will Jimmy T. see the coaching box again this season?) and the rampaging Rockies, who, despite being dragged down into the morass by Rev. No Knees, have been playing good ball as of late.

TWINS GUT MARLINS AT KBG
On the windswept tundra of KBG Field last night, the Twins, fresh off announcing a sponsorship arrangement with AARP, and buoyed by the nourishment of CB's Early Bird Special, romped to an easy 22-6 victory over the Marlins, once again establishing themselves as the team to beat in the 2007 Season. The assault was led by the birthday boy, Donnie "I certainly don't feel 55" Vanderbeck, who hit for the cycle on his big night (and was given some extra creamed corn as a birthday bonus at the pregame meal), Johnny "Jersey City" Corbliss, and the return of the Ninja Warrior, Mike "Samurai" DeSanctis. The Twins' next victim is the Yankees, who first will try to avenge an earlier bitter loss to the Red Sox on Thursday. Pete "Bullseye" Vanderbeck has been spotted throwing rocks at squirrels in preparation for the rematch. Tonight the resurgent Rockies will look to extend their winning streak to 3 games against the Mets despite the Mendoza-esque batting average of their gimpy first baseman, aka No Knees McElroy. Rumor has it that Chris "The Waffler" Ilg was spotted giving No Knees some batting tips over the weekend - this has not been confirmed at press time.

REDBIRDS REBOUND; TELEPHONE SERVICE INTACT
After a stern talking-to from their fiery manager (not to mention the three 6 AM practices) the Cardinals ended their 2 game losing streak with a vengeance, as they used a 14 run inning to catapult themselves over the Mets 19-8. The Cards found a way to ignore the swirling controversy that's been brewing over the potential tampering charges that may be levied against them by the Twins. The eye of the original storm, Jimmy "Where's Rhino??" Teehan, had no comment for the press. Somehow, despite the onslaught against the Mets' pitching and defense, no telephone poles were damaged at KBG...

Umpires Needed; Some Sportsmanship Remains...
League President Jim Conway is looking to recruit umpires for the current season - no experience (or much knowledge of the game as evidenced by Rhino's stint as an umpire...) is necessary. Last night's action featured a dual-location doubleheader, as the Red Sox found a way to overpower a short-handed Yankees squad 11-5 at the High School field, marring the heretofore perfect managing record of Ken "Twinkle Toes" Schuffenhauer. In the nightcap at KBG, Kenny Z.'s Marlins not only let the player-challenged Mets use extra players, he lent them some of his own players in order to avoid a forfeit - and the Mets/Marlins combo actually wound up winning the game. It's good to see that some teams know the true meaning of sportsmanship, while others are so obsessed with getting the almighty "W"...

First Full Week in the Books
The 2007 Season is now in full swing (as it were) with the conclusion of a complete week of games. The Yankees began the week by scoring a couple early touchdowns and then holding off the charging Angels to win by a final score of 24-17. On Tuesday the Red Sox nipped the Mets 7-5 in a rain-shortened (yet official) contest. The Rockies, "led" by No Knees McElroy, had a tough debut on Wednesday, as they were spanked by the Marlins 18-3; and the mighty Twins, sparked by their inspirational utility man, Chris 'Still Mr. .500' Ilg, overcame an early deficit to storm back and top the Cardinals 21-13 on Thursday. The 1972 Dolphins are already starting to get concerned about the powerful Twins, as they have been labeled even money to go through the regular season undefeated, and are currently listed as 11 run favorites for their match next week against the Angels.

4 teams have missed 2 games due to inclement weather and 2 make-up games have been scheduled for the High School field: May 7th - Red Sox at Yankees, and May 14th - Angels at Rockies. Both games will start at 6:30.

IT IS WITH SOME TREPEDATION THAT THE GAMES SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY AND THURSDAY THIS WEEK WILL BE PLAYED AT 8:15 ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND. BARN RAISING AT KBG THIS SUNDAY (APR. 29TH)
A note from our fearless leader, Jim Conway: The Recreation Department is scheduling a “barn raising” for Sunday at 4 PM at the KBG Field to remove the sand, clay and stones washed on to the field during the recent flood. Those interested should bring tools - shovels, heavy duty rakes and brooms, wheelbarrows, pails and work gloves. The more the merrier. The Red Sox-Yankees game was rained out last night so the Yankees' new team sponsor (Slimfast) will have to wait a week before getting their money's worth.

UPDATE - APRIL 24TH
It's status quo (that's Latin for no change, Rhino) for this week - the Tuesday and Thursday games are postponed and the Wednesday game will be played as scheduled. The Twins, behind the powerful bat of Chris "Mr. .500" Ilg, hooked the Marlins by a final of 16-10 last night in the first game to be played on the High School field. And Congratulations to John & Colleen Jennings on the birth of their daughter Cassidy Julia.

DRAFT COMPLETED - SCHEDULES POSTED
Under its usual veil of secrecy, the cabal (Rhino's word for the day even though he's on sabbatical this season) of softball powers that be conducted the annual summer league draft this past Tuesday. Rosters have been set and the schedules are now available on the website. The opener is set for Monday, April 16th, with the Red Sox squaring off against the Marlins. The Cards don't play until that Wednesday, so there will be plenty of time for a practice or 2 before then. The defending champion Twins open up in prime time on Thursday night against the revamped Yankee hierarchy being led by interim manager Ken "The Animal" Schuffenhauer and his volatile assistant, Pete "Who Can I Bean?" Vanderbeck. After going out on top, Joe Monaco has turned the reins of the Twins over to that noted tandem of Don "Up the Middle" Vanderbeck and John "The Big Toe" Corbliss.

CYCLONES STORM PAST LUMBERKINGS FOR TITLE
The Cyclones brought their hitting shoes to KBG last night as they pounded the previously unbeaten LumberKings 21-11 to win their second consecutive Fall League Championship. Gary LaForge led the assault with 2 home runs and a triple and Dave "Father Time" Cosgrove earned the win on the mound despite taking a few shots off various body parts, some of which are better left unmentioned. The postgame gala at the Knights was well attended, especially by various non-finals participants like Rich "Token" Reinstein and Mike "No Knees" McElroy. Fortunately no additional injuries were reported...

To our umpires, Chris Tooher, Tom Kyritz, Willie O'Toole, Jim Conway, Eric Miller Chris Ilg, Don Vanderbeck, Jim Teehan, Gary Lippman, Rich Reinstein and Pete Smith, who volunteered their time & skills in officiating our games, we thank you for your commitment. We have created something special here in River Edge, the games were very well attended despite the cold weather, especially that championship game yesterday, and everyone both fan & players are looking forward to next year. You should be proud of your efforts and the foundation for a successful season next year is already in place. We will continue to grow!

I look forward to seeing everyone next season in the spring and please do enjoy your Holidays!

FINAL IS SET-LUMBERKINGS & CYCLONES WIN SQUEAKERS
It was an evening of taut (Rhino's last word of the day) and exciting softball as the unbeaten Lumberkings and defending champion Cyclones emerged victorious and advanced to Monday's Championship Game.

In the first game Dennis "Mr. Home Run Context Winner" Lowenfels scored Chris "New Pappy" Kirkby, who played stellar defense as usual, with the first run of the game with a 2-out single in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Kings added 4 big runs in the 5th and held off a couple RedBird rallies in the last 2 innings as they only managed to score 1 run in each of those last 2 frames.

In the nightcap, the Cyclones took the early lead over the favored Mud Hens but were unable to break the game open. The distaff roosters eventually took a 9-8 lead late in the game but the Cyclones quickly tied the score, which is how it remained until the last inning. Kevin "Soup" Campbell blasted a leadoff triple and scored on a sac fly to give the Cyclones a 10-9 advantage heading to the bottom of the 7th. It looked like there would be no joy in Knights-ville as the Hens loaded the bases with no outs, but after a line out to short, another fine defensive play by the aforementioned Mr. Campbell behind the dish, and a fly ball to left field, Dave "Folly Floater" Cosgrove, who had earlier gone yard himself in a blow dedicated to old guys everywhere, had escaped from the precarious situation and the Cyclones had won the game, thus earning the right to take on the LumberKings in the title game.

Don't forget that there will be a post-championship fete (ok- that's Rhino's last word of the day) at the Knights of Columbus right after the conclusion of the Finals.

DENNIS GOES DEEP FOR HR TITLE - RHINO NOT SO MUCH
Dennis Lowenfels of the mighty LumberKings defeated Lee Baronian in the finals of the Home Run hitting contest at KBG last night, hitting many prodigious (Rhino's word for the day) shots along the way. And now, some words of wisdom from the league honcho, Jose Branco:

Congratulations to Dennis Lowenfels who won the homerun derby last night and won it in a BIG way. Dennis hit 5 homeruns in the first round, a whopping 16 in the second (which is a Fall League record, I might add) and another 5 in the third for a grand total of 26. Some of Dennis homeruns were to the pitcher's mound on the other field, to the first base side, to the fence in left center, and he even hit one into the woods/river in left field. We had a good turn out last night and everyone had a great time. A big thank you to Don, John, and Jim for their assistance last night in judging.

Thank you for helping me!

Jose

FINAL FOUR IS SET - CYCLONES, REDBIRDS ADVANCE
It was a perfect night for softball (or ice fishing) on the windswept tundra known as KBG as the 2006 Fall Playoffs got underway. In the opener the 3rd seeded Cyclones held off a valiant comeback effort by the Pugnacious Pooches (aka the SurfDawgs) and held on for a 15-13 victory. Dave "Steve Hamilton lives" Cosgrove settled down to retire the potential tying run after a bases-clearing triple by Donnie "See - I can hit somewhere besides the middle" Vanderbeck shrunk the deficit to 2 runs.

In the nightcap, the Red Birds, in a mild upset, dominated the Renegades by taking advantage of several defensive lapses (that's what can happen when your team name has 3 "E's" in it...) and emerged victorious by a final tally of 13-7.

The upstart Birds will now take on the top-seeded LumberKings, who scuffled to win both regular season match-ups, in the first semi-final on Sunday, while the Cyclones will slug it out with the #2 Mud Hens in the second half of Sunday's twin bill. And speaking of slugging, don't forget to come down and participate and/or heckle the 3rd Annual HR Hitting Contest tonight at KBG. Rich "This Year I'm Going for Seven-Fitty" Reinstein has virtually guaranteed victory and has openly questioned why anyone else is even trying. Ok, perhaps that was a wee bit of an exaggeration, but you know that's what he believes...

REGAULAR SEASON ENDS TONIGHT;PLAYOFF MATCH-UPS SET
The Red Birds square off against the Rhino/Schuff-less Mud Hens tonight at KBG in the final regular season game of the 2006 Fall Season. In last night's action, the Cyclones held off the Renegades by a score of 9-8 to clinch 3rd place and have a playoff date with the undermanned Surf Dawgs, who bacame the latest victim of the unbeaten LumberKings in the nightcap. The Kings finished the regular season 10-0, and the target on their back just keeps getting bigger (see: Cardinals, 2006 Summer) as the playoffs commence. The online schedule has been updated - the playoff matchups are as follows:

FALL SEASON HALF OVER- KINGS STILL REIGN (FOR NOW)
The undefeated LumberKings once again overcame an early deficit and some defensive lapses to manufacture another Greek-like come from behind 23-18 victory over the pesky Renegades last night at KBG. Sunday's first game ended with an identical 23-18 score, as the Mud Hens shook off some mid-game mound difficulties to post the win over the winless Surf Dawgs. In the nightcap (an appropriate term given the fact that the Cyclones were playing), the Red Birds got off the proverbial schneid with a 17-9 pasting of the aformentioned Cyclones.

As the second half of the season gets underway this weekend, there are some burning questions for each of the teams:

LumberKings: Will the pattern of falling into an early game malaise (Rhino's word for the day) eventually catch up to them as their quest for an unbeaten season continues?

Mud Hens: Will Rhino ever hit one six fitty with the new fence (along with the peanut gallery) in left taunting him during each at bat?

Renegades: Will Mike McElroy find his knees in time for the playoffs? And will Pete "Bullseye" Smith be too shell-shocked to finish the season?

Cyclones: Will the Brew Crew get back their Fall League mojo even though the ol' gang was broken up this season?

Red Birds: Will Bert's late night scouting trip to KBG reap dividends in back-to-back games against the Kings next week?

Surf Dawgs: Now that they have an almost full team (anything over 7 players is a bonus) will they manage to hold a lead and win some games with the playoffs fast approaching?

RAINOUTS RESCHEDULED
The 3 games that were rained out on Aug. 27th have been rescheduled as follows:

Sun. Oct. 1st at 5:30: Redbirds at LumberKings

Sun. Oct. 8th at 5:30: Surf Dawgs at Renegades

Sun. Oct. 15th at 5:30: Cyclones at Mud Hens

The online schedule has been adjusted to reflect these changes. The beneficent (Rhino's word for the day) webmaster made sure that no teams had to play a 5:30 game and an 8:30 game on the same night. 2 teams (Pups and Hens) are scheduled for doubleheaders on their make-up nights.

SURGING 'GADES WIN AGAIN; "NO KNEES" POPS OFF
The Renegades, buoyed (Rhino's word for the day) by the 2nd consecutive appearance of their hurler Pete Smith, managed to overcome the absence of their inspirational leader, Chris "Stevie Wonder" Ilg, as they cruised to a 20-12 victory over the Cyclones, with whom they are now tied for 3rd place. Next on the schedule for the streaking Renegades are the first place LumberKings. Mike "No Knees" McElroy, exhibiting a Roy Williams persona, has guaranteed victory over the unbeaten Kings, and has been advised by counsel to not dig in too deep in the batter's box, lest a wayward pitch accidentally finds its mark. The showdown will take place next Monday night - assuming of course that Mr. McElroy shows up for the contest...

LUMBERKINGS AND MUD HENS ROLL ON
On a warm foggy summer night at KBG the LumberKings continued cutting a swath (Rhino's first word in a while so I made it a small one) through the Fall League as they overcame a lethargic start and early 8-2 deficit to muzzle the Surf Dawgs by a final tally of 21-11. Dennis Lowenfels blasted 2 home runs to spark the hitting attack. After an interesting, and somewhat risque tag play near 3rd base, rumors that John "Ned Beatty" Jennings was seen singing show tunes and running out to buy some Liza Minnelli CD's after the game have not been confirmed. In the second game, the Mud Hens rebounded from their only loss of the season as they plucked the RedBirds and "chalked" up 19-7 victory. The Sharp Dressed Man, aka Pat O'Sullivan, kept the RedBirds off balance with his crafty pitching to help his squad to victory.

SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR NEXT 3 WEEKS
The next 3 Monday games (8/28, 9/4, & 9/11) have been switched to the prior Sunday at 5 PM. The schedules on the website have been updated to reflect these changes. Also, there are 3 available roster spots in case anyone else is interested in joining the Fall League.

FALL DRAFT COMPLETED
It was a (relatively) quiet night at the Knights as the Fall Draft happened on Monday night. The rosters & schedules are posted on the website and the Season Opener this Sunday will pit the Cyclones (aka the Luceys w/o their usual cadre (Rhino's first Fall Season word) of accomplices, against the Red Birds (a lot of the Cards minus those 2 traitors, Rhino & Jimmy T.) Let the heckling commence...

TWINS ROLL SOX TO TAKE TITLE
The Twins concluded their dominant run through the playoffs with a 14-5 thrashing of the Red Sox at balmy KBG Field last night, to give their Manager Joe Monaco and Coach Al "Mr. Warmth" Grayson a 2nd Summer League Championship. The Sox, perhaps still a bit too giddy (of course we would never say "hungover") after their taut semi-final win over the previously unbeaten Cards, found themselves with an early-inning deficit and were never able to get back in the game, as once again the Twins defense, led by Johnny "Big Toe" Corbliss and Donnie "Pops" Vanderbeck, excelled. Despite the presence of some noted league rapscallions (Rhino's last word of the Summer season) such as The Heckler and Dick Johnson, no summons were issued.

August 3, 2006
TWINS KNEECAP ROCKIES; RED SOX BUMP OFF CARDS...
There were fireworks galore at KBG last night - in the first game they were provided by the Twins as they pounded the Rockies 16-2. Pete Smith and his band of defensive-minded minions continued their playoff mastery - they have only given up a total of 3 runs in their 2 victories. Aside from pitching, hitting & defense the Rockies played well.

The 2nd game had a little bit of everything: some timely hitting by the Red Sox; some Sox-like defense from the Cards; a mid-game ejection; a little brushback action; and of course some warm and fuzzy commentary from The Heckler, who somehow managed to get 3 traffic tickets on his trip home. When the smoke had cleared the Red Sox emerged victorious 18-12, and advanced to tonight's Championship Game vs. the red-hot Twins.

In post-game developments, it was learned from anonymous sources that a Fall League schism (Rhino's word for the day) has occurred, and a parting of the Redbirds will be taking place. And it seems that BlueClaw loyalty only goes so far, and that's not just whistling Dixie (Chicks). Et tu, Rhino?

Pre-Playoff Musings from Cruise Boy
Looks like there was all sorts of excitement in the last week of the regular season. The Mets were so happy after getting their first win in their prior game that they forgot how to score any runs, as Bert's juggernaut (aka the Cardinals) shut them out in a playoff preview. Of course there's no pressure on the Redbirds as they take their unblemished 12-0 mark into the minefield known as the Playoffs.

Even with their Big Toe, Johnny Cakes Corbliss, away on "business" across the Pond, the Twins rebounded from their loss to the Rockies by pounding the listless Red Sox 20-4 and claiming 3rd place in the process. The Sox will square off against the enigmatic Marlins, who nipped the the "we already clinched 2nd place and are cruising into the playoffs" Rockies 11-10, in the dreaded 4-5 game on Monday night. The Rockies' opponent will be Coach Buttermaker's Yankees, who managed to shake off their dramatic 9 inning loss to the previously winless Amazin's with an 11-2 pasting of the Angels. The Halos finished in 6th and will face the resurgent Twins in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday at 6:30.

July 27, 2006
Playoff Schedule
Monday July 31:

6:30 #4Red Sox v #5 Marlins; 8:15 #1 Cardinals v #8 Mets

Tuesday August 1:

6:30 #3 Twins v # 6 Angels; 8:15 # 2 Rockies v # 7 Yankees

Winners play Wednesday at 6:30 and 8:15 and the Finals are at 7 PM on Thursday.

With help from those not playing or umpiring, we will be cooking out the first three nights.

PLAYOFF SEEDS UP IN AIR WITH 2 WEEKS TO GO
Even though there are only 2 games left in the regular season, seeds #2-7 are still up for grabs. The only certain first round match-up will pit the unbeaten Cards against the winless Mets. It's rumored that this game will be the first playoff game (Monday at 6:30) so Bert's Bashers will have enough time (given their long commutes home) to be tucked in by their 10 PM curfew, but this has not been confirmed as of press time. A slide show of the 2004 playoffs will be presented to the Mets by Coach Buttermaker just before the first pitch to provide some inspiration.

In the battle for the #2 seed, both the Rockies and Twins control their own destiny, with the winner of Tuesday's battle having the upper hand. The Red Sox are lurking in the wings (or by the bar) and can claim 2nd with 2 wins and a Twins victory over the Rockies.

The Marlins and revived Angels can finish in the top 4 and secure home field for their first playoff game with a strong finish and some help from above - these 2 will square off tomorrow night in the prelim to the Twins/Rockies contest. Coach Buttermaker's Yankee squad will try to shake off the rust and add to the Mets' malaise (took a while but there's Rhino's word for the day) on Wednesday, just before the heavyweight match-up between the Sox and Cards.

Week in Review
The big story this week is the surging Angels, who streaked to their third victory in a row over the once (& future?) mighty Twins thanks to some stellar defense and the crafty pitching of their cagey veteran leader, Phil "3 Bucks a Gallon" McGarry. Rumors that the Twins went to the diner for some strength-inducing Johnny Cakes have not been confirmed.

In the nightcap, despite the on-call status of River Edge's Finest, there was no violence and no further shoulder injuries as the Cardinals remained unbeaten with a 20-11 triumph over the Marlins.

The Cards' next opponent is the 6-3 Rockies, whom they squeaked by 5-4 in their prior meeting thanks to a well-placed triple by their "Punch and Judy" specialist, Rich "I want to bat in the first inning just once" Reinstein. The Rockies warmed up for the rematch by dispatching Coach Buttermaker's Yankees 9-4, as "Reverend Pete" Vanderbeck, aka The Heckler, took yet another collar while trying in vain to behead the mild-mannered Rockies hurler.

The final game of the weak pitted the winless Mets against the beerless Red Sox, and the Amazins managed to once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they dropped a 9-8 decision after holding a tenuous (it took a while but there's Rhino's word for the day) one run lead heading into the last inning.

ANOTHER QUIZ
Which of these 3 highly unlikely events actually happened last night?

A. Pigs were flying.

B. Chris Ilg had a date with a non-inflatable woman.

C. The Angels won a game.

If you picked "C" you win a valuable prize (see Jimmy "The Peacemaker" Woods for the details.) The Gashouse Gang (aka Phil's Phanatics) got off the proverbial schneid last night and vaulted into a 6th place tie with an 8-4 victory over the undermanned Yankees. Coach Buttermaker had to finish up some pools and was unavailable for comment, but right fielder Timmy Lupus was seen crying in the parking lot after the devastating loss.

TWINS REBOUND WITH EASY WIN OVER ROCKIES
The Twins put a quick stop to their 2 game losing streak (and even had enough players for a change) as they broke open a close game with a 5 run 4th en route to a 10-6 victory over the Rockies. Minnesota's finest exhibited stellar defense throughout the contest, as several sparkling plays were turned in by John "Don't Call Me Johnny Cakes" Corbliss. The only highlight for the Rockies was a 3-run HR off the bat of Mike "No Knees" McElroy. Softball action resumes Tuesday night with a scintillating (Rhino's word for the day) matchup: the winless Angels take on the 1-5 Yankees - No Doz will be available at the concession stand.

WHEN IS A TIE A LOSS?
Just when you thought someone had to win last night's contest between the winless Mets and the 1-4 Yankees, neither squad had enough players to field a team, so a double forfeit is in the books. Tonight is a battle for 2nd place as the 3-1 Rockies take on the 3-2 Twins, who've been manning the waiver wire to make sure last week's debacle is not repeated.

THE ANSWER: 40
And the question is:

A) How old is prolific (Rhino's first new word for May) author Jimmy Woods?

B) How many double plays will Coach Buttermaker's speedy Yankees hit into this year?

C) How many runs did the Cardinals ring up against the reeling Marlins this week?

While A & B are good choices, the answer we're looking for is C. Even though they were "down 1" in every inning, Bert's Bashers still managed to score 40 runs. Rumors that a torn rotator cuff was suffered from waving all those runners home have not been confirmed.

In other games this week, the Red Sox (aka Lucey, Inc.) improved to 2-1 by holding off the winless Mets 13-10. Also, the unbeaten Twins prepped for their first place showdown with the mighty Cards by outslugging the Angels 22-15, despite 2 home runs from the aforementioned Mr. Woods, who was allegedly seen surreptitiously (word #2 for Rhino) downing a plate of steamed paella before the game. The week ended with an 8-2 Rockies win over the Yankees, as Pete Vesey made his season debut a memorable one with a 2-run triple that was laced right over third base... The Mountain Men also had 2 homers and turned 3 DP's to ease the burden on their struggling pitcher, who somehow accidentally hit Pete "I'm playing infield against the Birds" Vanderbeck with one of his weak pitches.

THE ANSWER: 250, 250, 250
Is the question that goes with the above answer:

A) What you'd pay for 3 loaves of bread at Carousel?

B) The dimensions of the OF fences at Ringwood?

C) The batting average, fielding average, and weight of Rich "Rhino" Reinstein?

While A&B could be correct, the answer we're looking for, as anyone who witnessed last night's Cardinal victory will attest to, is C. Despite the intrusive presence of the aforementioned barrister to the stars, the Cards managed to squeak out an 18-10 victory over the winless Angels at a soggy KBG last night (hey, at least they'll make the playoffs). Bert's Bashers were led by none other than Michael "Big Potato" Collins, who crushed a 2 run homer in the cause. The electric 2006 pitching debut of Eddie "I'm Not Sid" Fernandez was one of the few bright spots for the 0-2 Angels.

FIRST WEEK IN THE BOOKS AS ROCKIES TOP HALOS
The first week of the 2006 Softball Season ended last night as the Purple People Eaters (aka the Rockies) used a home run barrage to hold off the Big Green Machine (the Angels) by a final tally of 9-4. Mike "One Knee" McElroy pounded 2 homers, while Mike "Eagle Eye' James and Pete Loquette also went yard to help their cagey veteran Manager, Jim Conway (who also pitched a few scoreless innings to boot), to his inaugural win of the 2006 campaign. The somnambulent bats of the Angels were held in check by the defensive minded Rockies, who turned a couple double plays in the effort. Jimmy "I miss Rhino" Woods did manage to blast a triple to deep 2nd base to give his team a cheap thrill in the last inning. Despite the presence of Mr. Woods and other known troublemakers from the Fall League who choose to remain anonymous, the game ended peacefully and River Edge's Finest did not have to be summoned to restore order...

TWINS POUND RUDDERLESS YANKEES IN SEASON OPENER
On a brisk Spring night at the newly-bright field at KBG Park (it was nice to see something else be well-lit aside from the players for a change), the Twins established themselves as one of the teams to beat as they demoralized the Yankees (assuming of course the Yankees had morals in the first place) by a final score of 20-12. The Twins attack was spearheaded by Gary "Don't Give Me Any" Lippman and their wannabe Caped Crusader, John "I can play 3B like Sheffield if Necessary" Corbliss. The Yankees were at a disadvantage from the beginning, however, as their Big Toe, Coach Buttermaker, was tending to civic business and left the squad to fend for themselves.

OPENING NIGHT SET FOR APRIL 17TH - SCHEDULE POSTED
The 2006 Softball Season gets underway on Monday, April 17th at 8:15 at KBG, as the once mighty Yankees, led by the venerable Chris "Coach Buttermaker" Lau and his new assistant, Pete "I am not Bill Paxton" Vanderbeck, take on the Twins, who will be managed once again by Joe Monaco and his sidekick, Al "Dr. Achilles" Grayson. The 2006 Twins also feature the dynamic duo of Don "Batman" Vanderbeck and his trusty companion, John "Why Can't I be Batman?" Corbliss. And to paraphrase the immortal Navin R. Johnson, "The New Schedule is Here, The New Schedule is Here".

PIRATES EDGE REDBIRDS FOR TITLE
In a tight hard-fought contest, the Lucey Brigade, aka the Pirates, held off the upset-minded Redbirds by a final tally of 10-8 to win the Fall League Championship. A post-game celebration, replete (Rhino's word for the day) with food and beverages (although there were no Franks and Beans much to the chagrin of some)was held at the Knights. Both teams had engineered major comebacks in their semi-final victories on Saturday - the Redbirds stormed back from a 13-3 4th inning deficit to overtake the top-seeded BlueClaws 19-16. Some were saying they hadn't seen gagging like that since Monica Lewinsky was in the White House, but that's a bit harsh I suppose. The Pirates trailed 8-1 early in their contest against the Sea Dogs and then rallied to beat the Pugnacious Pooches, as Tommy "White Lightning" Herity streaked home with the winning run.

FEROCIOUS DOGS ROMP; REDBIRDS TOP SHREKS
In Quarterfinal action last night on the shores of the raging Hacky, the mighty Sea Dogs awoke with a vengeance from a season-long hibernation, and when feeding time was complete, they had posted an 18-6 pasting on the vanquished Giants/Gaylords/Paellas/Elvises (pick one), who were last seen with their tails between their legs on the way back to the batting cage - after all, the summer season is only 7 months away. In the nightcap, the Shreks discovered that the third time wasn't the charm as the Redbirds broke open a close game in the late innings to emerge with a 17-11 triumph. Groundskeeper Willie led the batting and verbal assault on the outmanned Senators, and the Redbirds are a confident crew heading into their showdown with the first place BlueClaws. The Buttermaker-inspired Sea Dogs (aka the Teal Terrors) continue their quest for glory against the #2 Pirates. The winners of those 2 games meet Sunday night at 7 for the title - in case of inclement weather, rumor has it that the Final will be played as part of a doubleheader with the Toilet Bowl on Thanksgiving morning, but this has not been confirmed as of press time.

Playoff & All Star News (REVISED)
After the Giants squeaked out a 20-18 defensive struggle over the Redbirds Monday night, the playoff pairings are set. The #1 seed BlueClaws, led by Jimmy Hoffa Woods, will play the winner of the #4 Redbirds/#5 Senators matchup while the #2 Pirates await the winner of the #3 Giants/#6 Sea Dogs tilt. In other news, the teams for the All Star Game on Saturday have been determined as well. It will be the Pirates/Giants/Redbirds vs. the BlueClaws/Senators/Sea Dogs. UPDATE: In completing their never ending quest for a tiebreaker that can enable them to finish 2nd, the Giants will play a regular season game Thursday vs. the Sea Dogs - if the Kings win there will be a coin flip for 2nd place.

Claws Top Pups; Shreks Fall to Bucs
In the antepenultimate (Rhino - start researching) night of regular season action, the BlueClaws overcame a 6 run first inning barrage by the Pesky Pooches, and eventually came back to muzzle the Sea Dogs 14-9, despite (or was it because of?) the absence of their fearless leader, Jimmy "I live my life by the COC Rules" Woods. Disturbing rumors about late night hot tub frolicking at the Sniper's Lair have not been confirmed, and Rich "Mr. Loofah" Reinstein refused to comment on the allegations. In the nightcap, the Pirates clinched a tie for 2nd place as they held off the Senators, 17-16, despite 2 more hits from Chris "Mr. October" Ilg, who finished the season with 7 hits in his last 15 AB's and wound up with a robust .333 average for the season. Tonight's game features Round 2 of the Cardinals' Reunion Tour as the Redbirds square off against the Giants.

Shreks Make Claws Swoon in Monsoon
In weather conditions only a swamp-dwelling ogre could love, the Senators continued their mastery over the first place BlueClaws, as they escaped with a 21-19 victory after blowing a 12-0 lead last night at KBG. The Shreks were led by their eponymous (Rhino - look in the dictionary under "E") field general, Chris "Mr. October" Ilg, who spanked 3 hits and earned his inaugural pitching triumph despite some spotty fielding from his new shortstop, Pete "The Heckler" Vanderbeck. Rumors that disgruntled (and really, when has he ever been gruntled?) Claws Manager Jimmy Woods has called a practice for tonight rain or shine have not been confirmed. The playoff spots for 2nd-5th place have still not been determined with only a few games left to be played in the regular season. The reeling Crabcakes and surging Puppies (or should they now be known as the Dobermans?) have clinched 1st and 6th place, respectively. Ilg Watch: Game: 3 for 5 (not a typo); Season:10 for 32; Average: .313

Senators Romp in Swamp;Postponed Games Rescheduled
In a game played in a swamp-like milieu (Rhino's word for the day), the duly inspired Shreks smacked the Periwinkle Pooches with a rolled up newspaper and came away with a 16-5 victory. The Senators, who are now only 1/2 game out of 3rd, moved into a tie for 4th with the Gaylords, whom they will play in their next contest on Sunday. The stands of KBG figure to be packed as the Giants' entourage will be out in full force with their Thunder Stix. In other news, the rainouts from Week 1 have been rescheduled: BlueClaws vs. Senators on Tues. 10/11 at 8:30 & Sea Dogs vs. Giants on Thurs. 10/13 at 8:30. Ilg Watch: Game: 0 for 3; Season: 5 for 23; Avg.=.217

Giants Start New Streak; BlueClaws Pluck Redbirds
The mighty Giants continued their climb up the standings as they squeaked out a 13-12 decision over the undermanned Pirates. The Bucs eschewed (there's your word for the day Rhino) the proverbial "Book" by pitching to Giants' star Paul Sabatello with first base open in the bottom of the 8th and paid the price for the move as his blast to right won the game. In the nightcap, the first place BlueClaws plated 6 in the top of the first and cruised to a 21-8 triumph over the Redbirds. The Crustaceans (word #2 for Rhino) were led by the sparkling defense of their fearless leader James Earl Woods, who may have Wally Pipped regular shortstop Chris Kirkby to a DH role when he returns. Also, Rich "Rhino" Reinstein managed to accumulate 6 RBI's in between trips to the parking lot to lead the hitting assault. No arrests were reported as of press time. The BlueClaws Magic Number to clinch a first round bye in the playoffs stands at 1, and if the Pups knock off the Shreks this evening, the Claws can finish no worse than 2nd.

First Full Night of Games in the Books
The teams playing last night at KBG all brought their hitting shoes, as a total of 65 runs were scored during the first doubleheader of the Fall Season. In the opener, the expansion Sea Dogs, clad in their precious aqua jerseys that had been bequeathed to them by their fraternity brothers at Lambda Lambda Lambda, got out to a big lead and held on for a 17-14 victory over the Pirates, who were missing their star pitcher/2B, Jim "The Gambler" Arakelian. Fortunately the game ended early enough for most of the Sea Dogs to make it home in time for the Judy Garland Film Festival. In the nightcap, Bert "Willis Reed" Schmitt gamely played the first couple innings until being relieved in the field and at the plate by a late arrival, but his presence was enough to inspire his Redbirds to a 19-15 over the Shreks, (or is it Senators?), who lost in spite of a game effort turned in by rookie hurler Eddie "I'm not Sid" Fernandez. Ilg Watch Update: game: 1 for 4; season: 1 for 4 - Average=.250 (currently below Ilg Line of .275)

Rosters Posted on Website
The complete Fall Rosters are now posted - click on "Teams" to see the details for each squad. The Senators, led by their boy-manager Chris Ilg, are the youngest team with an average age of 37, while the crusty Sea Dogs are the most "mature" with an average age of 43.

Fall Draft Completed - Schedules Posted
The Fall Draft is now history and the teams and schedules are set. The 2005 Fall Season will commence on Sunday Aug. 14th at 7 PM as Chris Ilg's Senators take on Woody's BlueClaws in the opener. Rumor has it that both squads may be missing some firepower, so it will be up to the supporting casts to get the inaugural victory. The nightcap on Sunday will have the Sea Dogs, with Don Vanderbeck and John Corbliss manning the helm, taking on the defending Fall champion Giants, led by the ubiquitous Sgt. Spidey and Jose "The Prince of Paella" Branco. The opening week concludes with the Monday night matchup of Bert's Redbirds squaring off against the Lucey clan (also known as the Pirates).

Cards Take Title - Hang Sox Out to Dry
The dream season of Bert's Redbirds came to a fitting conclusion as they held off the Red Sox and won the 2005 Championship by the final score of 4-3. The Cards overcame an early 3-0 deficit but 2 runs in the 4th and 5th innings proved to be enough for the victory and subsequent raid of CVS. Kudos to Commissioner Jim Conway for another smooth season and thanks to all the volunteers who fed the masses during the playoffs.

Cards Escape With Win; Red Sox Roll
The top-seeded Cardinals narrowly averted a major upset, as they scored in the bottom of the 8th to eke out a 6-5 victory over the "Why Not Us?" Twins. The kids from St. Paul had rallied with 4 runs in the 7th to tie the contest and send the normally composed Cards into a wee bit of a frenzy before they recovered for the win. Wednesday practices for the Redbirds will be at 6 AM and 2 PM. In the nightcap, the Red Sox jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and after the short-handed Angels, playing without their inspirational leader, Jose "No Knees" Branco, closed the gap to 4-3, the Green Machine pulled away and eventually won 13-4. Tuesday's remaining quarterfinal action pits the Mets vs. the Rockies in the early matchup followed by Buttermaker's Boy Wonders (the Yankees to you and me) squaring off vs. the Marlins.

Playoff Scenarios
There's one week left in the regular season and the playoff possibilities are numerous. Remember that wining percentage is the deciding factor, not points. If you click on "Standings" on the left you'll see the correct order. Here's the Reader's Digest version: 1. Cards (11-2) - Have clinched 1st place overall and home field advantage throughout their playoff run, however long (or brief) it may be. 2. Red Sox (8-3-1) - Will clinch 2nd with a win over the Marlins or a loss by the Yankees. Can finish no worse than 3rd. 3. Yankees (7-4) - Can clinch 2nd with a win over Angels and a Red Sox loss. Will get 3rd with a win and Red Sox win. If Yanks lose, can finish 3rd (if Mets & Rockies both lose), 4th (if one of Mets/Rockies combo wins), or 5th (if Mets & Rockies both win). 4. Mets (7-5) - Will clinch 4th with a win over Cards or loss by Rockies to Twins. Can jump up to 3rd with a win and loss by Yankees. Will fall to 5th with a loss and win by Rockies. 5. Rockies (7-5-1) - Will win 3rd with a win and losses by Mets & Yankees. Will get 4th with a win and Mets or Yankees loss. Otherwise will be 5th. 6. Marlins (4-9) - will clinch 6th with a win over Red Sox or loss by Twins to Rockies. Otherwise will tie with Twins for 6th and coin flip will determine higher seed since regular season games were split. 7. Twins (3-10) - Will clinch 7th with either a win over Rockies or loss by Angels to Yankees. Will tie for 6th (see above) with a win and Marlins loss. Will tie for 7th (to be broken by coin flip) with a loss and win by Angels. 8. Angels (2-11) - Can tie for 7th (see above) with win over Yankees and loss by Twins to Rockies. Otherwise it's a date with the Redbirds in the first round.

Unbeaten Cards Dealt Loss by Buttermaker's Boys
The champagne corks were popping in Miami last night, as the mighty Redbirds, who were the last remaining undefeated team, were edged 3-2 by the Yankees. The Pinstripers (or is it Candy Stripers?) were led by their inspirational wearer of the tools of ignorance (that means your the catcher), Chris "The Gambler's Best Friend" Ilg, as he rocketed a blast past the stunned Sgt. Spidey and willed his team to victory. Rumors that the distraught Cards manager Bert "We Want to Hit" Schmitt collected shoelaces and belts from his players to avert further tragedy have not been confirmed. In the anti-climactic nightcap, the Rockies, aided by some borrowed Mets players, including the erstwhile Scooter, held off the remaining Mets 9-7, setting up a potential playoff rematch.

Mets Gut Marlins; Cards (yawn) Win Again
The surging Mets managed to overcome a shaky 1st inning by their erratic starting pitcher, as a 5-0 deficit quickly disappeared among a barrage of hits on 2 different fields. When the smoke cleared, 18 runs had crossed the plate and the Gambler was scrambling to cover all the "Over" wagers. The Mets then cruised to a 25-11 victory over the Marlins, who were led by the 3 hits and cagey baserunning of Ray "Master Sergeant" Stitz, who's leaving for Iraq next week. Best wishes go out to Ray from everyone in the League and we'll see you in 579 days. In the first game, the Big Red Machine (aka the Cardinals) climbed all over the short-handed Rockies, 17-3, to boost their winning streak to 10. Bert's Boys claim that they haven't felt the pressure yet, but it's been reported that Nick Buoniconti may show up soon if the streak continues, in order to put the hex of the '72 Dolphins on the Redbirds.

Yanks Eke Out Win; Mets Take 3rd Straight
Coach Buttermaker's boys, lethargic (that means sluggish, Chris) for most of the game, rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to edge the upset-minded Twins, 9-8, as Pete Smith singled in the winning run off Jim "The Mad Armenian" Arakelian. Earlier, Meatball Al joined the not so exclusive club of pitchers who've struck out Chris "Only 1 K Today" Ilg. In the 2nd game, the Mets continued their march up the standings by spanking the Angels like a Neverland visitor, 18-4. John "Last Out" Jennings returned from his early season injury to spark the Mets as they won their 3rd straight contest. When asked about a possible make-up to their rainout with the Mets, Yankees spokesman Pete "I am not Bill Paxton" Vanderbeck strongly discouraged any such notion, as he doesn't want his teammate and confidante Mr Ilg to break the league strikeout record (again).

Cards, Marlins Emerge Victorious in First Twinbill
On a placid, humid night at KBG, the Cardinals (aka Bert's Bashers) ran their unbeaten streak to 8 games with an 8-2 victory over the Rockies. In the nightcap, the Marlins, sparked by the crafty pitching and timely hitting of cagey veteran Al "Twinkle Toes" Hein, came from behind to top the Red Sox 14-10 in 8 innings. Attention now turns to Wednesday's key match-up (also called the Sibling Soiree), as the Ilgs and Vanderbecks do battle in the Yankees/Twins contest.

Mets Keep Streak Alive by Edging Twins
After overcoming an early 5-0 deficit and the insertion of a certain unnamed rusty pitcher into the rotation, the Amazin' Mets stormed back and won in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 7th as a 2-out single brought in Bobby Higgins as the winning run for the 9-8 victory. Rumors that Coach Buttermaker's Yankee squad are petitioning the Commish to not schedule a make-up for the rained out game against the resurgent Mets have not been confirmed.

Ilg Leads Yanks to Victory- Deep Throat Revealed?
Led by the 1 hit and stellar (well, at least not as bad as usual) defensive play of their inspirational leader, Chris "Engelberg" Ilg, the Yankees erupted for 12 runs in the 6th inning and cruised to a 19-6 victory over the reeling Marlins. Mr Ilg, whose average ballooned to .091, refused comment when asked if he received any batting tips from his sister. Also, in the most highly anticipated match race since Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure, Chris narrowly lost to Jeremy Willis, despite getting a quick start. In other news, it seems The Gambler has beeen unmasked, and let's just say it wasn't Mark Felt.

Good Thing The Angels Savored That Victory
The Angels came crashing back to Earth last night as the Yankees, with the help of some anonymous ringers, squeaked out a 23-2 victory. Of course, the absence of Chris "Tony Soprano, "Special K", "Triple Play" "Automatic Out" Ilg didn't seem to hurt the Yankees' cause either. And rumors that Coach Buttermaker left him tied up at the Knights have not been proven yet - so for now it's just conjecture.

Angels savor 10 inning victory.
Crash McGarry led his undermanned crew to an exciting extra inning win. The Angels were led by two non-roster additions who for obvious reasons wish to stay anonymous. The win was memorable for two reasons. First, league watchers cannot recall any games longer than 10 innings and more significant, last year's playoff winner also had only one win paced by outside help.
