Leading up to the start of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s 2020-21 season, which starts Nov. 13, 2020, the league is publishing team previews.

These previews will highlight areas of focus for the respective organizations as well as players. Our last story featured the Fernie Ghostriders, and now we shift to the Golden Rockets in the Eddie Mountain Division.

The Rockets did not qualify for the Teck Cup playoffs last season and finished the final 10 games with Chuck Wight as their head coach. He enters his first full season with that role, as well as being the general manager. He has gone into the season striving to improve the Rockets’ depth chart.

“The recruiting process was very unique this year. Jumping into a new network and working that way towards filling to get a deeper roster,” he says.

A month into the season and Wight continues working on his roster, but he likes the talent level they have. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted him shaping the roster.

“It just worked out for us having some of the core veterans coming back. That’s what we wanted to work with. That’s a good thing for us,” says Wight, who won four of 10 games as Rockets coach last season. “We’ve got five experienced KI defencemen to work with and we will be grooming a few rookies. We’ve got a couple of good forwards returning.”

Wight has been preparing the Rockets to play as high tempo a style as they can.

“That’s how we finished the season. Playing a more uptempo game. Being a fast team,” he says.

The Rockets have one of the shorter camps in the KIJHL as they only began in early October. Wight sees the excitement of the players to get going. The Rockets are doing various team building activities, which include hiking in the mountains.

Incoming rookies:

Jock Michaels - Sherwood Park, Alta., Centre- Sherwood Park Kings U18AAA. In 32 GP, 6 PTS. He will bring good speed to the lineup.

Jeremi Delaquis- Quispamsis, N.B. - Goalie- Saint John Vitos. Is a solid goalie with midget AAA experience. Wight is looking forward to seeing him develop.

Dyson Germann- Lloydminster, Sask., Forward- Lloydminster Blazers. In 29 GP, 23 PTS. Is expected to be a good player for the Rockets.

Key returnees- Leading scorer Bryce Trimmer (forward), Jaden Callan (defence), Brett Benson, and they brought back Kale Wareham (defence) who played with Golden two years ago, from Sicamous. Wight says, Trimmer, Callan and Benson are going to set the pace and energy with the way they play.
