T-Bird's TKO'ed
2nd straight year
What a difference a day makes!
On Friday night, Craig Pidcock looked untouchable, and the T-Birds looked to be a sure-fire bet to face the Wickenish Hawks in the winners bracket final on Sunday morning.
But after a thrilling come from behind victory against Smithson Drilling in the morning - the Birds' bats fell silent against "Weepee" and the Swiftsure Club from Victoria. Swiftsure finally broke up the pitchers dual and scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning against Craig Pidcock - and the Birds failed to answer.
The loss meant the Birds had to take the field again and face the rested Nanaimo Budget with Bob Harlow pitching. Harlow shut down the T-Bird sticks while his mates knocked two 2-run homers off of Billy Johnston to put the game on ice early.
The Birds may have been distracted by a group of unruly fans whose enthusiasm, combined with some lewd comments provoked a T-Bird player to enter the stands to confront a fan.
Tournament officials promptly escorted the fan out and closed the beer garden, preventing any further incident.
In other action, the Hawks survived a protest concerning the "illegal pitch" rule as it applied to Rob Epp, and defeated Kal Tire to remain the other undefeated team - along with Swiftsure.
