Sacramento, California – Canada Head Coach Kingsley Jones has named his starting 23-man roster for Saturday’s Americas Rugby Championship second round test match against USA at Papa Murphy’s Park in Sacramento, California.
The fixture comes after an incredibly difficult 32-31 loss to Uruguay in Montevideo last weekend. The result means Canada has one final shot at qualifying for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in the form of a repechage tournament taking place in November.
Canada will be looking to bounce back against USA this weekend and build on the positives from their spirited performance in Montevideo that saw two late tries and a final minute missed conversion seal a one-point victory for the South Americans.
Canada has not beaten USA since 2013 but will take belief from the fact that the all-time record still stands at 38-18-2 in their favour.
The road to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan starts this weekend and the players know nothing would taste better than a victory on the arch-rivals home turf to build confidence for the season ahead.
A significant milestone for DTH van der Merwe will give the team added motivation on Saturday as the all-time-record-try-scorer is set to win his 50th cap for Canada in what has been a remarkable career so far. Van der Merwe has been an outstanding servant for Canadian rugby in the 12 years since making his debut against Barbados in 2006 and will be looking to add to his historic tally of 31 tries against the Eagles this weekend.
Notable selections include Victoria, BC’s Luke Campbell who makes his debut starting at 8th man along with hooker Martial Lagain and outside-back Cole Davis and are likely to earn their first cap off the bench. While Guiseppe du Toit replaces Ben Lesage at outside centre to form a new midfield combination with Nick Blevins.
