Big Comeback in Nanaimo
- Submitted by
Duncan, BC - The Cowichan Capitals scored four unanswered goals to overcome a two goal deficit taking down the Nanaimo Clippers 4-2 Wednesday night at Frank Crane Arena.

Down 2-1 to start the third period, Ben Verrall laid into a Jared Domin rebound scoring his second of the season to tie the game four minutes in, and from there on in the Capitals had all the momentum. With five and a half minutes remaining, captain Adam Osczevski had the puck behind the Clipper net then found Connor Russell high in the slot who scored his second in as many games for what turned out to be the game winner.

Then before the Clippers could get Jakob Walter to the bench for the extra attacker, Kyle Topping wristed the puck short side after a nice feed from Kade Kehoe for his third of the season to give the Caps some insurance with 89 seconds remaining in the game.

The win is the first for the Capitals against the Clippers this season in three tries, improving Cowichan to 17-12-2-3 and back in sole possession of second place in the division, six points back of Nanaimo with a game in hand.

While it was a solid finish to the game for the Capitals, it wasn't such a fantastic start as the Clippers outshot Cowichan 13-6 in the first period. Will Reilly scored his fifth of the season on the power play halfway through the period banking the shot past Storm Phaneuf from below the goal line. The just 1:23 into the second, Matt Hoover doubled the Clippers lead with his 25th of the season with Yanni Kaldis and Sheldon Rempal picking up the helpers.

The Capitals got some much needed life when Jared Domin fed the puck from the corner to Matt Hudie at the side of the crease who then spun and fired a low shot past Walter for his 14th of the season to cut Nanaimo's lead in half, starting the comeback trail.

As is often the case when the Capitals and Clippers meet up, the game had its fair share of penalties including a pair of fights. Less than a minute after Hudie scored, Jake Switzer and Sean Buchanan dropped the mitts. And then five minutes into the third, Ryan Hogg receieved a spear and went at it with Nolan Aibel. It was the 17 year-old's first bout of the season as he landed a few solid lefts, clearly getting the victory.

Phaneuf made 33 saves for his 15th win of the season bumping up his season save percentage to .919 in the process.

Picking up an assist on Verrall's tying goal, Topping finished with his first multi-point game in the BCHL while Hudie also had a pair of points on the night. Russell's assist on Hudie's second period goal in addition to scoring the game winner earned the 19 year-old defenceman first star honours with Hudie picking up the game's second star.

The Capitals look for a third straight road win Friday night with a trek to Alberni Valley on tap for a fourth meeting of the season with the Bulldogs.
