October Recap

Moira Bryan

The defending AJFHL champions had a busy schedule through September and October and a strong start to the season. The Wolves went 8-1-0-1 and established themselves in first place in the North Division.

#9 Kessa Wasmuth

On Saturday, September 28, the Wolves hosted the Central Alberta Amazons for their home opener. Prior to puck drop, the team roster was announced and players skated up to the blue line after being announced to then stand for the national anthem. The Wolves opened the scoring midway through the first period with a Bobby Orr style goal from #24 Kate Macpherson who put the puck in the back of the net as she was midway through tripping over the goalie. A minute later, #3 Ainsley McCoy-Birk scored to double the Wolves' lead. Later in the period, #6 Brooklyn Piebiak scored to put the Wolves up by three after the first period. The Wolves did not lose any momentum heading into the second, when #17 Julia Birmingham scored just two and a half minutes into the period. Midway through the frame #9 Kessa Wasmuth received a breakaway pass and put the puck up over the goalie's blocker for her first AJFHL goal! Later still, #7 Nayha Johal added a power play goal to the Wolves lead, and just a minute later another power play goal came from #16 Carolyne Lavoie. The Wolves kept the pressure on through the third period, but no more goals came until four minutes left in the game when #13 Nicole Thomas scored. Two minutes later, #22 Brenna Reid added a goal of her own to increase the final score to 9-0! #31 Paige Thomas stopped all 14 shots that she faced for a shutout win!

#31 Paige Thomas

Midway through the second the Wolves finally broke the tie when #4 Rory Bothwell put the puck past the Steele goaltender. Just one minute into the third period, Piebiak increased the Wolves' lead with a goal on the power play. Later in the period, McCoy-Birk added another power play goal, and Lavoie scored with fifty seconds left in the game to finish the game with a 4-0 win for the Wolves! #30 Brooke Fawcett stopped all 17 shots she faced, for her first AJFHL win, and first AJFHL shutout!
