Lakers aim to spoil SFU's perfect season

Lakers aim to spoil SFU's perfect season

BCIHL Media

SFU is one win away from the BCIHL's first ever perfect season, and the most dominant regular season performance since the 15-1 SFU team in 2008/09 led by Jackson Friesen, Andrew Graham, Jason Pagliaro and Warren Gardner.

It's the expansion Okanagan Lakers who get a chance to spoil the party with fresh legs and SFU playing their 3rd game in 4 days. The Lakers, despite only having one win on the season, look like a different team from the start of the year. They have grit, goaltending, and are quickly finding their scoring punch. It's discipline that's hurt the Lakers, who've pushed every other BCIHL team to overtime or a single goal margin including 2 shootout losses to SFU in the pre-season. The Lakers gave SFU a minor scare last game on February 5th in Burnaby, scoring 4 in the third period but falling 8-5.

The Lakers are missing their top scorer Arik Breton who's serving a suspension, but former Prince George Spruce King (BCHL) defenseman Zach Gabruch stepped up with 2 goals in the 8-5 loss. Former Waywayseecappo Wolverine (MJHL) Rayman Bassi has given the offense a boost in the spring semester with 3 points in 5 games while adding grit as well.

If the Lakers are going to take advantage of the opportunity, they'll need timely goaltending and to stay out of the penalty box, as this SFU team has been stingy when it comes to giving up powerplays.

The puck drops at 4:00pm on Monday February 21st at Bill Copeland Arena and can be streamed live on YouTube
