LANGENBURG OUT OF THE GATE QUICK

LANGENBURG OUT OF THE GATE QUICK

Mike Stackhouse

The Langenburg Warriors picked up a pair of wins in their opening weekend of play as they defeated the hometown Theodore Buffalos 5-2 on Friday and then pulled away in the second period and won, handily, 10-2 over the Cote Selects in their home opener on Saturday.

Hayden Wiebe scored a goal and set up another in Friday's game while he added two more and four points on Saturday to pace the Warriors with 6-points through two games.  Tyler Kirkup and Mike Rogoschewsky have three goals and four points each through the first two games of the year.

The Selects opened their season a week ago with a decisive win over Preeceville in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at their brand new facility.  Since then, they've dropped a pair of games on the road, including a tight and thrilling 7-5 decision against the Esterhazy Flyers on Friday night.  It marked the first senior game in Esterhazy since 2019 and the fans clearly missed the entertainment as people were lined up outside waiting to get in after the opening face off.  An estimated crowd of 600 were treated to the game of the season so far with defenseman Jayden Isaac pacing the attack with a hat trick and five points as he turned in a dominating performance from the back end.  It spoiled a four point game from Konrad McKay of the Selects, who have also been led by Kailum Gervais and Tristan Keshane through the early going as both players have 7-points in 3-games.

Colton Yellowhorn had a goal and two assists on Saturday as Wapella opened their year with a 4-2 road win at Churchbridge.  Cole Cusitar and Carson Wowchuk scored for the Imperials, who are trying to replace a void on offense left by the retirement of Chris Korchinski.

Warren Shymko blocked 24 shots on Saturday as the Buffs picked up their first win by downing the Swan Valley Axemen 3-1.  Swan Valley opened their year with a win at Preeceville last weekend and are looking to replace the highly skilled Josh Tripp, who was recently named head coach of the MJHL Swan Valley Stampeders.

There are a full slate of games next weekend with Canora opening their season at Churchbridge on Friday.  Rocanville will play its first game on Saturday when the Cobras pay a visit.  One other game on Friday has Preeceville at Langenburg.  Other Saturday games feature Wapella at Swan Valley in what would be the longest road trip of the year.  Esterhazy is at Preeceville and Theodore goes to Cote.
