This past weekend saw two postponed games, one upset, and a couple of first place battles on
a showdown Saturday night.
Friday night started off with the Canora Cobras travelling north on Highway #9 to visit the Pats
of Preeceville. The snakes roared out to a 6-0 lead before new Pat Kylen Taphorn replied with a
shorthanded marker partway through the second period. However, that would be the extent of
the Preeceville offence for the night, as the Cobras kept their collective foot in the gas and left
town with a 10-1 win. This was a feisty affair, with the Pats targeting Logan Foster in particular
with a number of hard hits. By the end of the night, over 100 combined minutes in penalties had
been issued, including one fight, a boarding major, a misconduct, a gross misconduct, and a
game misconduct. Scott Mikoski and Logan Foster led the way for the Cobras with four points
apiece, with Mikoski recording a hat trick and Foster posting a brace of goals. Derrick
Schwartz, Carter Dereniwsky, Vaughan Wilgosh, Cole Rathgeber, Skylar Wallin, Kody Rock,
and Troy Zulyniak all racked up multiple points on the evening. Rylan Palchewich went the
distance between the pipes for the win, while Jasper Booker and Coleman Metherell both spent
time in the Pats crease.
Theodore’s Judith Ungar Memorial Arena played host to the other Friday night game, as the
Cote Selects were in town to take on the Buffalos. This was a closely contested match, with the
game tied at three after the first period, and Cote nursing a 6-5 lead after the second. The third
period saw the Buffs throw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Cote cage, only to see tender Zack
Cote turn aside all 20 third period shots. Kalium Gervais put the icing on a big evening, both as
a player and for his team, with an empty netter with one second left, and Cote skated away with
the 7-5 win. For the Selects, Gervais netted a hat trick and four points on the night, with
Brennan Watson notching his own hat trick and Tristan Keshane recording three apples.
Theodore’s captain, Dylan Johnson, put up two goals and an assist, while Keenan Taphorn
assisted on two goals. In net, the aforementioned Zack Cote recorded the win, while Adam
Stokes took the loss in the Buffs cage.
Showdown saturday night went a long way in deciding who the top teams in the North and
South divisions are. In the North, the Canora Cobras have first place on lockdown after an 8-5
win in Theodore over the host Buffs. Former Buffs captain, Derrick Schwartz, had an
impressive showing versus his former team with a goal and four points on the night. Cody
Dubas, Kody Rock, Logan Foster, Scott Mikoski, and Carter Dereniwsky with the eventual
game-winner all had multiple points for the game. For the Buffalos, who battled back after
trailing 5-2 early in the third period, it was offence by committee, with Dalane Lamb having the
only multiple point evening with two assists. Canora’s Brad Sentes recorded the win in the
Cobras’ net, while Adam Stokes took the loss for the Buffs.
In the South Division, Odgy’s boys took their Tiger show on the road north to Langenburg.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Tigers came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders, leading
4-0 after the first period enroute to an 8-2 win for Rocanville. Tayler Thompson, with a night off
from coaching in the MJHL, put up a hat trick and five points to lead the way for the Tigers.
Jacob Tibbatts also notched a hat trick for Rocanville, while Ashley Howie and Zaine Walker
each had two assists. Veteran Mike Rogoschewsky fired home two goals for Warriors, with
Hayden Wiebe recording two assists. Carter Olson was in net for Langenburg, and Kieren
Madill kept the crease for the Tigers.
