HJHL Roundup: Wild night in Stettler

A wild night in Stettler capped off a thrilling three-game Friday night in the HJHL.

Strathmore (8) vs. Stettler (7)

STETTLER – Matt Thomson scored three times, including the game-winner just 35 seconds into overtime as the Strathmore Wheatland Kings skated off with a wild road 8-7 victory over the Stettler Lightning on Friday night.

It was perhaps one of the craziest first periods you will ever see as the Lightning (2-7-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 48 seconds in thanks to Braydon Whiteford’s sixth goal of the season. However, just three minutes and 17 seconds later, it was the Wheatland Kings (5-4-1) that had a 4-1 lead, scoring four times in a span of 2:44.

Back came the Lightning thanks to an incredible four straight goals off the stick of Dylan Houston, giving them a 5-4 lead after 20 minutes. Houston would add another late in the third to send it to overtime and give himself a five-goal night.

Keenan Ogle finished with a goal and two helpers for Strathmore, while Garret Vander Ploeg, Ryan Grasdahl, Hayden Vander Ploeg and George Montour rounded out the scoring.

Kieran Rost chipped into the Stettler offence with a goal and two helpers, while Braydon Whiteford added a single.

GAME SUMMARY

High River (7) vs. Airdrie (4)

HIGH RIVER – A three-goal night from Davis Sheldon paced the High River Flyers to a 7-4 win over the Airdrie Thunder.

Evan Pakkala added a pair of goals and setup two more for the Flyers (5-5-1), while Taylor Clark and Chase Groeneveld each chipped in with a single.

High River led 2-0 after 20 minutes and 5-0 early in the second period before the Thunder (8-3-2) would charge back with four unanswered to make it a one-goal game, but that would be as close as they would get.

Dylan Jensen had the win between the pipes for the Flyers, making 26 saves along the way.

The Thunder got a two-goal night from Clay Murray, while Jared Baindridge and Dylan Wenzel also found the back of the net.

GAME SUMMARY

Mountainview (6) vs. Okotoks (3)

DIDSBURY – Quintin Thorburn scored twice as the Mountainview Colts skated to a 6-3 win over the Okotoks Bisons on Friday evening.

Colton Anderson and Josh Gette each finished with a goal and two helpers for the Colts (7-3-1), which have now won three in a row.

Reid Money was spectacular between the Mountainview barber poles, stopping 42-of-45 shots on the night. Spencer Dowd and Matthew Myatt rounded out the scoring.

Devin Reagan made 35 saves for Okotoks, which got goals from Joshua McCulloch, Robbie McLean and Kyle Harrison.
