HJHL Roundup: Shootouts galore on Saturday evening

If you like shootouts, you would have liked Saturday night in the HJHL.

Stettler (4) vs. Mountainview (3)

BIG VALLEY – Brandan Bardwell scored the winner in the fifth round of the shootout as the Stettler Lightning won a wild one on Saturday night, taking a 4-3 win over the Mountainview Colts.

Jordan McCallum made 36 saves between the pipes for the Lightning, including stopping all five shooters he faced in the shootout.

The Lightning led 2-1 with five minutes left in the game, and then things got crazy. Josh Gette knotted the score even at two with a shorthanded effort, however just 1:59 later Ethan Rost restored the Stettler lead. Then, with 38 seconds remaining, Wyatt Gelinas found the back of the net to pull the Colts even once again and send the game to overtime,

Gette finished with two goals on the night, while Dylan Houston rounded out the scoring for Stettler.

Ethan Woodward made 30 saves in the Mountainview crease.

GAME SUMMARY

Coaldale (4) vs. Red Deer (3)

COALDALE – Three players scored in regulation and three more scored in the shootout as the Coaldale Copperheads skated to a 4-3 win over the Red Deer Vipers.

Jedd Horvath, Calvin Swanson and Sam Paskuski had the goals in regulation for Coaldale, which got 27 saves from goaltender Nolan Berner.

Dalton Angeltvedt, Nicholas Scott and Aidan Wilson replied for the Vipers, which held leads of 1-0 after 20 minutes and 2-1 going into the third period, where they would see the Copperheads take the lead with two quick goals before Wilson would find the equalizer on a shorthanded effort at the midway mark of the period.

Brandyn Howg, Tyler Anderson and Jayden Bexte all scored in the shootout for Coaldale, which went three-for-four. Justin Pearup and Mack Differenz found the back of the net for the Vipers, which went two-for-four.

Cole Sears made 30 saves in the loss for Red Deer.

GAME SUMMARY

Medicine Hat (8) vs. High River (7)

MEDICINE HAT – Eight different players found the back of the net for the Medicine Hat Cubs in regulation, but it was Noah Irvine’s shootout marker that sealed the deal to a wild 8-7 win over the High River Flyers.

Tavin Straub led all Cubs’ skaters with a four-point outing, scoring once and setting up three more, while Bailey Taylor finished with a goal and two assists.

High River held leads of 4-1 in the second period and then 7-3 with less than 13 minutes to play in regulation before the Cubs would storm back.

Kaidin Hodgson, Kian Simonson, Tristan Stensrud, Matt Clement and Chasen McKenna rounded out the scoring for Medicine Hat.

Davis Sheldon had himself a game for the Flyers as he found the back of the net twice and added three helpers, while teammate Josh Younker had two goals and one assist. Connor Minchin, Mason Mazur and McCarthy Many Fingers each provided a single.

GAME SUMMARY

Cochrane (5) vs. Okotoks (2)

COCHRANE – Brandon Aab scored twice as the Cochrane Generals skated to an 5-2 win over the Okotoks Bisons on Saturday evening.

Austin Keller chipped in with a goal and two helpers for the Generals, while Erik Garber finished with 26 saves between the pipes.

Ben Shushkovsky and Kyle Becker replied for the Bisons.

Cochrane, which also got goals from Slater Ransom and Harry Osler, held leads of 1-0 after 20 minutes and 4-1 going into the final frame.

Devin Reagan made 36 saves in the Okotoks crease.
