HJHL Roundup: Thunder and Lightning victorious on Sunday

The Airdrie Thunder and Stettler Lightning each came away with victories on Sunday.

Airdrie (7) vs. Ponoka (5)

PONOKA – A two-goal game from Clay Murray paced the Airdrie Thunder to a 7-5 victory over the Ponoka Stampeders on Sunday afternoon.

Zachary Giroux and Jacob MacDonald led all skaters with three points a piece, scoring once and adding two assists, while Matt Thomson, Rylan Plante-Crough and Brett Campbell rounded out the scoring for the Thunder (20-6-3).

The two teams found themselves tied at one after 20 minutes before the Thunder took a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.

Jacob Sayler had two goals for the Stampeders (6-17-3), while Ryan Harder, Taite Opdendries and Jordan Sears each netted a single.

Ryan Simpson registered the win between the pipes for Airdrie, stopping 27 shots in the process.

GAME SUMMARY

Stettler (4) vs. Blackfalds (1)

BLACKFALDS – Jordan McCallum made 35 saves as the Stettler Lightning upended the Blackfalds Wranglers on Sunday by a score of 4-1.

Quade Cassidy scored twice for the Lightning (12-13-3), which went two-for-four on the man advantage.

Logan Spady and Dylan Houston rounded out the scoring for Stettler, each finding the back of the net in the opening frame to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Shawn Rowe scored the lone goal of the game for the Wranglers (16-11-0).
