A defensive battle in Strathmore highlighted a three-game Sunday across the HJHL.
Medicine Hat (2) vs. Strathmore (1)
STRATHMORE – Joshua Schafer scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout as the Medicine Hat Cubs edged the Strathmore Wheatland Kings by a score of 2-1 on Sunday evening.
Josh Breznik stood on his head between the Medicine Hat (12-18-2) pipes, stopping 55-of-56 shots faced in regulation as well as all four shootout attempts he faced.
After a scoreless first period, Jake Johnston put the Wheatland Kings (11-18-3) on the board 2:33 into the middle stanza, while Riley Florkowski responded just over four minutes later with a power-play marker for the Cubs.
Calum Humble finished with 44 saves for Strathmore.
Okotoks (8) vs. Stettler (6)
OKOTOKS – Kyle Harrison and Jason Horn each scored twice as the Okotoks Bisons took an 8-6 win over the Stettler Lightning on Sunday afternoon.
Joel Deeprose and Robbie McLean each finished with a goal and assist for the Bisons (21-10-2), while Hunter Maximnuk and Ryan McLean chipped in with a single apiece.
Dylan Houston factored in on five of the Lightning’s (13-15-3) six goals, scoring twice and setting up three others, while Kieran Rost also found the back of the net twice.
Quade Cassidy added a goal and two assists, while Nic Jordan rounded out the scoring.
Devin Reagan recorded the win between the pipes for the Bisons, making 43 saves on the day.
Jordan McCallum registered 49 saves for Stettler, which trailed 3-1 after 20 minutes and 6-4 going into the final frame.
Blackfalds (12) vs. Three Hills (1)
BLACKFALDS – A four-goal, one-assist performance off the stick of Landon Siegle paced the Blackfalds Wrangelrs to a 12-1 rout over the Three Hills Thrashers.
Ryan Chambers finished with three goals and one assist on the day, while Austin Wilson also had a four-point outing, scoring once and setting up three others.
Austin Lawson and Spencer Otto each added a goal and two assists to the scoreboard for the Wranglers (18-11-2), while Braden Olsen and Brett Westin each chipped in with a single.
Rylan Bardick stopped 11-of-12 shots faced in the Wranglers’ crease.
Kevin Schrock scored the lone goal for the Thrashers (1-30-0), which got 60 saves from netminder Alex Jones.
