Nolan Berner made 31 saves as the Coaldale Copperheads forced a decisive Game 3 of the 2018 Heritage Junior Hockey League Championship series after a 4-2 win on Saturday night over the Red Deer Vipers.
Jedd Horvath opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period, while Brandyn Howg and Ty Abbott tacked onto the Coaldale scoreboard in the middle stanza, making it a 3-0 game until the Vipers’ Declan Johnston got his team on the board with 35 seconds left in the frame.
Kayson Galllant then made things really interesting, finding the back of the net with 6:55 to play, making it a one-goal game.
Berner stood tall in the Coaldale crease, while Logan Middleton sealed the deal with an empty-netter in the final seconds.
Branden Bilodeau made 38 saves in the loss for Red Deer.
A HJHL champion will be crowned on Sunday night as the Vipers host Game 3. Puck drop Servus Arena is at 8::30pm.
