AIRDRIE – Jackson Little stopped 24-of-25 shots as the Airdrie Thunder took Game 1 of the best-of-five 2019 Heritage Junior Hockey League Final with a 3-1 win over the Coaldale Copperheads.
Benjamin Orde scored the lone goal of the first period to give the Thunder an early 1-0 lead, while Tyler Petrie and Kirkland Spencer added second period markers to make it a 3-1 cushion after 40 minutes.
The Thunder led for all but 1:20 in the game.
Ty Abbott scored the lone goal of the game for Coaldale, a power-play marker 1:57 into the middle stanza to tie the game, but the Thunder took the lead right back just 13 seconds later, on the goal from Petrie.
Nolan Berner was busy in the Copperheads crease, finishing with 49 saves on the night.
Game 2 of the series shifts to Coaldale on Saturday night. Puck drop is at 7:30pm.
