HJHL Roundup - Jan. 10

Scott Fisher

Cubs 5, Flyers 4

The Flyers gave the Cubs all they could handle, but came up just shy on Friday night.

Cooper Wilworth's second of the night — into an empty net — actually stood up as the winning goal as Layne Sniher brought the hosts back to within a goal with 45 seconds left.

Noah Irvine and Chandler Aleman both had a goal and an assist for the Cubs, who never trailed but were outshot 37-33.

Ethan Machan rounded out the scoring for Medicine Hat, which improved to 20-7-2, good for second place in the HJHL's South Division.

Josh Russo potted a pair and Nic Kennedy had a single for the Flyers (11-17-3), who sit fifth in the South.

The Cubs will look to deal the Bisons their second loss of the season in Okotoks on Sunday (1:15 p.m.).

The Flyers are off until next Friday when they host the Cochrane Generals.

Thunder 5, Stampeders 2

Jordan McConnell wasted little time setting the tone.

The Airdrie Thunder captain lit the lamp 31 seconds after the opening face-off and found the net again before the end of the period as the hosts roared out to a 3-0 lead.

Brayden Dunn, Luke Jensen and Cody Brodhagen also scored for the Thunder, who welcomed defenceman Jason Wenzel back to the fold on Friday night.

Jon Griffiths and Bailey Nesbitt replied for the Stampeders (6-20-2), who host the Strathmore Wheatland Kings on Sunday (3 p.m.).

Airdrie, which improved to 22-6-1, visits the Sylvan Lake Wranglers on Sunday (8 p.m.).
