Wranglers' McCubbing showcasing skills at Rebels camp

Skating with the junior B Blackfalds Wranglers as a 16-year-old last winter, defenceman Tyrell McCubbing felt he was a marked man.
“The (junior B) game was a lot rougher and faster paced,” McCubbing, who suited up with the minor midget AAA Red Deer North Star Chiefs the previous season, said Wednesday following a Red Deer Rebels main camp practice session at the Centrium.

“I felt like I improved a lot, but you had to keep your head on a swivel because people were coming after you. There were always older guys coming to hit you in the corners and during plays.”

Cut during the midget AAA Red Deer Optimist Chiefs camp last fall, the Red Deer County product decided to hook up with the Wranglers of the Heritage Junior League and enjoyed a stellar season. McCubbing notched five goals and collected 24 points in 34 regular-season outings and scored once and assisted on three markers in six playoff contests.

And despite being chased by players as old as 21, the six-foot, 160-pound rearguard refused to be intimidated, racking up a total of 72 minutes in penalties.
