PONOKA – A seven-goal opening period paced the Airdrie Thunder to a 9-4 win over the Ponoka Stampeders on Wednesday night at the Ponoka Culture & Recreation Complex.

Clay Murray led the way with three goals and an assist, while Rylan Plante-Crough added a goal and three helpers.

It was a wild first period that saw the Stampeders (5-15-2) jump out to a 2-0 lead just 1:08 into the frame before the Thunder (16-4-2) rallied back with seven unanswered goals to take a 7-2 lead into the middle stanza. The teams traded goals in the second and third period.

Gavin Klein and Dante Rapose each finished with a goal and two assists for Airdrie, while Andrew McLennan and Malyk John chipped in with singles. Kade Taplin picked up the win in goal, making 24 saves on the night.

Nate Higgins lit the lamp three times for the Stampeders, while Toran Corbier added a single.
