COBRAS WIN EMILE BALOGH TROPHY

COBRAS WIN EMILE BALOGH TROPHY

SEHL Staff

The Canora Cobras rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period by unleashing four goals in the final twenty minutes in defeating the Rocanville Tigers 5-3 on Saturday night to win the best of five league championship series 3-0 and laying claim to their first Emile Balogh Tropny.

Rocanville opened the scoring on a Taylor Thompson power play goal as he fired a laser from the slot but the Cobras got it back in the second as Logan Foster finished a nice pass play with a deke on Kieran Madill before the Tigers restored the advantage with a rebound goal from Jordan Robertson.

However, the Tigers got themselves into penalty trouble.  The Cobras started the third on the powerplay and Carter Dereniwsky tied it up just twenty seconds into the frame.  The Cobras got their first lead two minutes later as Foster went top shelf for his second of the game.  Ryley Stefanyshyn's powerplay goal at 7:15 made it 4-2.

Thompson's second of the game drew Rocanville to within one but then the Tigers spend the majority of the final ten minutes in the box and that included two lengthy five on threes, which stifled their ability to get the equalizer.

Dereniwsky's second of the game with 2:14 to go sealed it with the Cobras enjoying a 5-on-3.

Canora goalie Brad Sentes was outstanding in earning his 18th straight win (10-and-0 in the regular season and 8-and-0 in the playoffs).  Sentes held a Rocanville team that went 19 games without a regulation time loss to just 10 goals in three games and for his efforts gets the nod as the SEHL Playoff Most Valuable Player Award.  Honorable mention goes to Foster, who had 4-goals and 3-assists in the final series as well as 4-goals in the series clinching game against Theodore.
