SECOND PLACE SHOWDOWN IN NORTH
A relatively quiet weekend in SEHL action saw five games played. Friday night’s schedule had
only one game, as the Wapella Blackhawks went north to Esterhazy hoping to close ground on
the Flyers. Spotting the hometown Flyers a four goal lead in the first period probably wasn’t part
of the plan, but that’s what happened before Evan Armstrong got the Hawks on the board late in
the first. Armstrong’s goal seemed to wake up his teammates, as the Hawks would score five
more goals in the second until Jayden Isaac’s goal with 40 seconds left in the period tied the
game 6-6. Esterhazy’s Dustin Skilliter and Wapella’s Chase Schaber exchanged goals midway
through the third period, but any hopes Wapella had of a win were snuffed by Parker Johnson’s
game-winning goal off of Isaac’s feed with 7:33 left. Final score was Esterhazy 8, Wapella 7.
Esterhazy received a balanced attack, with Kaden Plaquin and Parker Johnson each scoring
two goals to go along with singles by four other players. Isaac, Plaquin, Johnson, Skilliter,
Colton Schick, Ty Collins, Brandon Pelletier, and Adamik Frumen all had multi-point efforts in
support of the winning goalie, Michael Andrews. For the Hawks, Ryland Maier, Riley Holloway,
and Evan Armstrong each had two goals, with multiple point outings from Colton Yellow Horn,
Schaber, and Rory Poole. Matt D’Orazio took the loss for the Hawks.

Saturday night had a slate of four games, starting off with the latest edition of the Langenburg
Warriors/Esterhazy Flyers rivalry in Langenburg. The Warriors, having missed out on a chance
to close the gap a bit on the South-leading Rocanville Tigers, were determined to not have a
repeat of their loss to Wapella. Nick Carlson’s first period marker started things off for the home
team, and the second period saw two more Langenburg goals before Esterhazy finally got on
the board with two goals. Up 3-2 after two, the Warriors stretched their lead to 5-2 before
Jayden Isaac’s late third period tally made the final score 5-3 Langenburg. Hayden Wiebe had
two goals for Langenburg, while Rylee Zimmer, Nick Carlson, Noah Kaminski, and Mike
Rogoschewsky all had multiple points. Carter Olson was the puckstopper of record for
Langenburg, while Dakota Berezowski took the loss for the Flyers. Jayden Isaac went 2-1-3
and Colton Schick had 1-2-3 in a losing effort.
Just west of Langenburg on Highway 16, the Churchbridge Imperials played host to the
powerhouse Rocanville Tigers. Odgy’s boys have been humming all season except for a hiccup
against Swan Valley, and on this night, they showed no mercy to the Imps. Up 6-0 after one and
9-0 after two, the Tigers were purring all night enroute to an 11-0 shellacking of Churchbridge.
Fresh off a suspension, Tayler Thompson had two goals and five points, while Ashley Howie
had a hat trick and an assist and Dylan Haney posted two goals and three assists. Multiple
point games were registered by Stephane Robidoux, Zaine Walker, Ryan Regel, and Landyn
Cochrane. Kieren Madill posted the shutout in the romp by the Tigers. Ryan Bezon took the
loss for the Imps.
Having gone winless in January, the Cote Selects headed south to Wapella to face an improving
Wapella Blackhawks squad. Special teams were the story of this game, as the teams combined
for six powerplay goals and two shorthanded goals on the evening. Up 2-1 after one, the
Hawks extended their lead to 5-3 after two periods. In the third period, any concept of defence
was tossed out the window as the teams managed a total of eleven goals over the 20 minute
stanza. A Chase Schaber PPG with 6:25 left made the score 10-4 Wapella, and seemingly put
the game out of reach for the Selects. However, Cote reminded Wapella how explosive their

offence can be with four straight goals in a span of about 2.5 minutes. The Cote comeback
would fall two goals short, as Riley Holloway salted away the win for the Blackhawks with an
empty-netter. Make the final an 11-8 win for Wapella. The Selects were led by Wenden
Shingoose, Tristan Keshane, and Terrain Cote, each of whom had four points on the night.
Braedon Boschman added a goal and two assists. Lane Shingoose earned a misconduct
penalty. Zack Cote was between the pipes for Cote. The Hawks saw Rory Poole post a goal
and four assists, Chase Schaber with a hat trick, and four point nights were posted by Ryland
Maier, Holloway, and Schaber. Matt D’Orazio was in net once again for Wapella.
The final game of the weekend was played up in Minitonas, as the Buff Bus dropped off
Theodore to face the Axemen. With the Buffalos only two points behind Swan Valley for second
place in the North division, both teams were geared up and ready to go. It would be the Buffs
riding a massive three goal first period enroute to a 5-3 road win over the Axemen. Warren
Shymko stood tall in the Buffalos net, turning away 26 of 29 shots to record the win. Up front,
Colby Vranai had two goals, Dalane Lamb and Dylan Thackeray each had two assists, and Brett
Peppler and Dylan Johnson each went 1-1-2 on the night. The Axemen saw Jeff Riddell post
two goals, with Carter Cockburn and Brandt Weldon racking up two assists on the night. Deven
Dubyk saw more rubber than a tire saleman, allowing four goals on 48 shots (Johnson’s goal
was a shorthanded empty-netter).
Next weekend features a total of eight games. Friday night is a busy one with five games,
including Langenburg at Canora, Churchbridge in Preeceville, Wapella hosting Rocanville, Cote
in Minitonas to face Swan Valley, and Theodore in Esterhazy. Saturday night features a big
showdown between Theodore and the Cobras in Canora, Swan Valley in Langenburg, and
Esterhazy facing the Blackhawks in Wapella.

JAN 10-12

January 10 th was a busy night in the SEHL, with four games being played. This night can
probably be most accurately described as the “Night of Upsets”. First off was the Churchbridge
Imperials rolling into Cote to face the Selects. Showing no signs of bus legs, the Imps came out
blasting as they bolted out to a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Kajon McKay finally got the
Selects on the board midway through the second period, but two more markers by the Imps
made the score 5-1 after two. The third period saw more of the same, as the Imperials cruised
to a somewhat surprising 7-2 win over Cote. For Churchbridge, Colby Jacob and Drew Putland
each notched two goals, with singles going to Dylan Tanner, Peyton Carriere, and Kyle
Stephansson. Veteran winger Don St. Marie, late of the Bredenbury Cougars, suited up for the
Imps. Kajon McKay and Brennan Watson responded for Cote, while Braedon Boschman had
two assists. Frazer Farmer took the loss for Cote, while Colby Entz was the winner in the
Churchbridge cage.
The second, and arguably bigger, upset of the night was in Wapella, where the visiting
Langenburg Warriors dropped a narrow decision to the hometown Blackhawks. A wild opening
stanza saw the Warriors squander leads of 2-0 and 3-1, with Chase Schaber scoring for
Wapella to knot things up at 3 heading into the second period. Hayden Wiebe put Langenburg
back in the lead with a powerplay marker midway through the period, only for Nathan Murray to
respond for the Hawks. The third period followed the same script as the second, with the
Hawks clawing their way back from a one goal deficit to send the game to overtime tied at 5.
With less than a minute left in the overtime frame, Troy Murray called game and sent the
hometown fans into a frenzy. Final score, 6-5 Wapella. Hayden Wiebe had a goal and two
assists for the Warriors, and Massen Ziola fired a hat trick. For Wapella, Chase Schaber (2-2-4)
and Nathan Murray (1-3-4) led the way, while Riley Holloway added one goal and one assist.
Matt D’Orazio manned the net for the Blackhawks, and Carter Olson was between the pipes for
Langenburg.
Up north, Theodore hit the road to Preeceville to face the Pats, who proved that trying to skate
with this particular herd was not conducive to winning. Leading 2-0 after the first and 5-0 after
two, the Buffs stampeded to a 10-1 drubbing of Preeceville. Brett Peppler had a hat trick and
four assists, Colby Vranai a hatty and two assists, and Dylan Johnson went 2-1-3 at the front of
the Buffs attack. Brady Frattinger from James Johnson was the only response for the Pats,
while Braiden Berezowski was between the pipes for Preeceville. Warren Shymko racked up
the win for the Buffs.
The final game of the night was a matchup in Rocanville between the undefeated Tigers and the
always-dangerour Swan Valley Axemen. The Axemen opened the scoring halfway through the
first on an Evan Morden goal, only for the Tigers to respond with a brace of goals before the first
intermission. Leading the game 2-1 after one, the Tigers let the lead slip away in the second, as
two Swan Valley snipes sandwiched a Jordan Robertson tally for Rocanville. Tied at 3,
Rocanville stretched out to a 5-3 lead about halfway through the third, but a late powerplay tally
by Carter Cockburn and a clutch Brock Jersak goal with the Axemen net empty sent the game
to extra time. Overtime solved nothing, so things went to a shootout, where Brady Burghart
netted the eventual game-winning goal for Swan Valley, making the final score 6-5 for the

Axemen and handing the Tigers their first loss of the season. Carter Cockburn had a strong
game for Swan Valley with two goals and two assists, and Jeff Riddell had two apples. For the
Tigers, Jordan Robertson had two goals and an assist, and Troy Hamilton had 1-2-3. Kieren
Madill took the loss in the Tigers crease, while Devan Dubyk was winner winner chicken dinner
for the Axemen.

Saturday, January 11 th featured three matchups. Down south, Wapella was looking to build on
their upset of the Warriors by knocking off the North division leading Canora Cobras. However,
the Cobras put this game on lockdown, skipping past the Blackhawks by a score of 6 to 1.
Casey Mydonick had a big night for the snakes with three assists, while Scott Mickoski had a
brace of goals to go along with an assist to help Brad Sentes to the win in the Canora cage.
Ryland Maier, on a setup by Troy Murray and Riley Holloway, was all the offence Wapella could
muster on the night. Matt D’Orazio took the loss in the Wapella crease.
Up north, Rocanville was looking for some redemption after their loss to Swan Valley, and they
found it in Preeceville at the expense of the Pats. In the first, it was looking like the Tigers were
going to lay an egg, as Preeceville ended the period up 3-2. However, the rest of the game was
all Tigers, as they scored five unanswered goals to cruise to a 7-3 win. Dylan Haney (a goal
and five ponts), Jordan Robertson (two goals and five points), and Troy Hamilton (a goal and
four points) were the tip of the spear for the Tigers, who had Ben Fouillard between the pipes.
Preeceville was led by a one goal, two assist performance by Jake Huska, while Braiden
Berezowski tended the twine. Seth Hort (Pats) and Zaine Walker exchanged misconducts
midway through the third period.
The final game of the night was in Cote, where the Selects played host to the Esterhazy Flyers.
This one was close for the first two periods, being tied at two after one and seeing the Flyers up
by one at 5-4 after two. The third period? The Selects don’t want to talk about the third period,
as the Flyers rattled off four straight goals to head back to potashland with a 9-4 win in their
pockets. Braedon Boschman’s playmaking was on display for Cote with two assists, which was
matched by Brennan Watson. Wenden Shingoose had two goals in a losing effort, which saw
Zack Cote in net for the Selects. The Flyers got massive performances from Brandon Pelletier
(3-4-7), Eli Halcrow (2-3-5), and Parker Johnson (2-4-6). Dakota Berezowski picked up the dub
for the Flyers.

Sunday afternoon had one game, which had been rescheduled from December 14.
Churchbridge made the long drive up to Minitonas to face the Axemen. The Imps continue to
show signs of improvement, despite spotting the Axemen a three goal lead in the first period
before Drew Putland converted a Dylan Tanner/Ryland Nernberg setup to make the score 3-1
after one. The second period saw the Imperials make the score 3-2 via a Curtis McGriskin
snipe, but Jamie Valentino deposited a Carter Cockburn feed with three seconds left to make it
4-2 Swan Valley after two. The third period saw the Axemen put things on lockdown, as neither
team scored. Ryan Bezon took the L in the Churchbridge net, while Drew Denischuk stopped
26 of 28 shots for the Axemen win. Continuing his big weekend, Carter Cockburn put up two
goals and two assists, while Jamie Valentino and Josh Tripp chipped in with a goal and an
assist each.

Next weekend features a total of five games. Friday night has Wapella in Esterhazy. Saturday
night features Theodore facing Swan Valley in Minitonas, Esterhazy in Langenburg, Rocanville
on the prowl in Churchbridge, and Cote facing off against the Blackhawks in Wapella.
