Week One: Devils, Jets win two on the road

Starting their season on the road, the Richmond Devils have jumped to the front of the pack in the South Coast women’s Hockey League after one week of play.
The Devils traveled to Victoria for a pair of games with the Island Surge in Week 1, returning home with wins by scores of 4-0 and 6-1.
Melissa Phillips and Emily Costales each had a goal and an assist in Richmond’s win in the first of the two games Saturday night at the Panorama Rec Centre. Stefanie Costales and Marisa Chau also tallied for the Devils, with Danielle Wierenga making 22 saves for the shutout.
Sunday morning at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, Emily Costales and 2023-24 SCWHL scoring champion Ashley Specht potted a pair of goals each for the visitors, with Chau and Hazel Barthel adding one each.
Nicole Constable netted the lone goal for the Surge.
The Fraser Valley Jets also won twice on the road in a span of less than 24 hours, starting their weekend with a 3-1 win over the South Fraser TNT at Planet Ice – Coquitlam Saturday night.
Jenna Proulx netted a pair of goals for Fraser Valley against the TNT, with Jessica Sherwood adding a single. Jackie Sollis replied for the home side.
Sunday afternoon at the Langley Twin Rinks, the Jets blanked the Surrey Wildcats 5-0 with Silvia Traversa and Sierra Rai tallying two each for Fraser Valley. Shay Gronnemose had a goal and an assist for the winners, with Stacey Wilson making 23 saves for the shutout.
The first game of the season saw the Meadow Ridge Moose defeat the North Shore Rebels 2-0 Thursday night at the Mody Park Arena in New Westminster.
The game was a rematch of last year’s SCWHL/provincial championship game, and the defending champion Moose won on goals by Kaely McMurtry and Shay-Lee McConnell.
Megan Buchanan was the winning goaltender, making 31 saves for the shutout.
